Can you please look over my birth plan, and give me any advice/suggestions/critiques/etc? It fits one page, but barely, and the writing is 10 pt font, so it's a bit small. I really can't find much to delete though to make it shorter, I feel I was pretty brief and to the point.
Birth Plan for Channelle **** and Erik ******
Obstetrician: ******** Doula: ******** Hospital: Wesley Hospital
We wish for as natural a birth as possible, avoiding unnecessary procedures and medications. However, if any medications or procedures become necessary, we ask that you discuss them with us in advance so that we can be participates in all decision making. The pregnancy has gone very well thus far. We have been careful to eat well and stay fit, and have done everything we can to prepare for a healthy and uncomplicated birth. We are aware that this birth plan is for the most ideal scenario, and understand in the case of an emergency that the doctor may need to stray from our wishes. All we ask is to be kept well informed and, if possible, asked permission before any procedure is done. We sincerly thank you for helping to bring our baby into this world and making our first child's birth a great experience!
Erik and Channelle would like our doula, ********, and our mothers be present for labor and delivery. We'd prefer as limited people come into the room as possible, including non-essential personnel. Erik knows to listen to Channelle, and try to keep out any extra family members if she asks of him.
Corrective Lenses: Channelle needs to wear contact lenses or glasses at all times when conscious, as her vision is so bad that being without corrective lenses is unbearably disorienting. This should not be a problem, as her contact lenses take very little time to remove in the event of an emergency, and furthermore are extended wear, and there would be no problem if they were left in her eyes for an extended period of time, up to a week, including periods of sleep. Erik will have her glasses in case she needs to remove her lenses.
We understand that the hospital has certain requirements to ensure the safety of mother and baby. We ask that within those requirements, there be as little restriction as possible:
*Channelle wants to be in control of her environment and have free choice of movement.
*Channelle has been educated on alternative ways to deal with pain. She's aware that there are pain medications available, but does not want them offered to her, if she does want medication for pain, she will ask for it. She does not plan on having an epidural, but aware that she can choose one if she so desires.
*She will want local anesthesia if the repair of tears or episiotomy is needed.
*We ask that Channelle pushes when she has the urge to push, for as long as she has the urge to push, in whatever position works best for her at the time without any coaching.
*We understand that sometimes a baby needs to come out NOW. Should that be the case, please explain what is happening and keep Channelle as informed as possible.
*Channelle would like the option to be able to reach down and touch the baby's head while she is coming out.
*When baby is born, she should be placed on Channelle's stomach immediately. If this isn't possible, please explain to Channelle what is happening with the baby so she doesn't panic.
*Please allow the cord to stop pulsating completely before cutting and wait for signs of natural separation of the placenta before applying cord traction.
*Erik should be the one to cut the cord.
*Please reserve pitocin, methergine or cytotec for cases where they are medically indicated to control bleeding.
*Please do not separate baby from Channelle AT ALL during their stay in the hospital. If this isn't possible, Erik should stay with the baby AT ALL times.
*Baby will be exclusively breastfed from the beginning. Please DO NOT give the baby any artificial nipples (pacifiers included) or supplemental feedings of sugar water or formula.
*Baby is supposed to be a Girl. Assuming she is not, he is NOT to be circumcised.
*We DO NOT consent to ANY vaccinations during our hospital stay. Channelle and Erik will discuss vaccinations with our pediatrician at our first week visit.
*We DO NOT consent to vitamin K injection, unless there is a medically warranted reason (such as the use of vaccum/forceps or trauma/bruising.) We WILL allow oral vitamin K if it is available.
*We DO NOT consent to antibiotic eye ointment for our baby.
*Please do not apply triple-dye to baby's cord stump.
*Channelle and Erik will be the ones to give baby her first bath. If she's particularly vernixy or otherwise goopy, we'd love to be able to give her a sponge bath in the first few hours after birth.
