Thanks for making another poll. You should link it in the other thread (which I think is good, too, just doesn't account for every baby we've each had).
The first was a high risk situation due to possible complications to the baby identified during the pregnancy. I was induced at full term and there was a full NICU team standing by. However, I negotiated the date of the induction (we did it a week later than originally proposed by the docs, because of my preferences) and if I had declined it and insisted on proceeding naturally and wait for me to go into labour naturally, my wishes would have been respected. Given the possible interventions that my baby might have needed immediately after delivery, I preferred to pick the date. I didn't want weekend shift coverage, on-call staff etc. dealing with my newborn. Every step was discussed with me in the weeks before birth and various options were explored - and Caesarian was never raised by either my OB, FP, the NICU docs or anyone else on the medical team. I did ask for an epidural, labour proceeded for 12 hours before the OB stepped in because the baby was posterior and after hours of pushing while he was crowning but getting nowhere, I agreed to some help.
The second was a natural vaginal birth in hospital, no epidural and no interventions.
I've been lurking in the thread requesting a forum to discuss Caesarian births. I'm a little uncertain about contributing there because I didn't have a Caesarian and I don't participate in the birthing fora because my dc were quite a bit older when I first started at MDC. I was surprised to find out that there is no forum to discuss Caesarians or that there's a question whether such a forum belongs here or would be beneficial. It seems obvious that all aspects of birthing should have a place at a site purported to be about mothering. I understand the strong emotions attached to the process but that shouldn't preclude discussion.
Well so far, after 56 votes, we are at a 20% section rate vs. 75% vaginal rate. That has a 4% error in it from the poll itself.
So if 20% of mom's are having c/s sections, it stands to reason to give them a forum. Only 1-1.5% or women in the US are having planned homebirths. I have no idea about UC numbers but they must be lower than that.....

If you count births. Right now the poll accounts for 130 babies born, 101 by vaginal delivery, and 29 by c-section. So right around 30% of children's births for those who voted in this poll were caesarean.
That is 22%. 29 c-sections out of 130 total births. 29/130 = 22.3%
Sorry... but I'm grading students on percentaging right now!

Thanks for doing this poll, Youngfrankenstein. I've been wondering about the numbers too as I follow the request for a c-section forum. Based on this poll, seems like c-section is effecting a signficant number of people on MDC.
I would also be curious to know how many moms on MDC have had a c-section. Right now the people with multiple births are skewing the numbers since people can vote multiple times. Maybe we should add another poll asking, "have you had a c-section?" and allow only for yes and no.
I make those mistakes all the time. It just so happened that I was grading similar calculations in students' assignments, came on here to take a break and caught it right away.
Always fun to make those mistakes in front of the class too

Thanks for this poll & the other poll. It will be interesting to see the numbers.
I just want to add that even if the results show that relatively few women on MDC are having c-sections and/or relatively few births are by c-section, it's still an issue that has importance here. No pregnant woman can be certain that she won't have a c-section; it's something everyone should at least have basic information about.

LOL. Yeah, I'd be quick to correct the mistake if one of my students made it. I even started out with 101+29 written on my paper, then got lured in by the easy math of 30 and 100.
