It doesn't have to be exclusively about natural childbirth in the hospital, but I'd really like to find a book that takes a positive yet realistic approach to planning natural childbirth in a hospital setting.

I read Birthing From Within before I had my first child, and it had a very negative affect on me.  The section about overcoming previous birth trauma, which if I recall correctly was at the beginning of the book, is something I really didn't need to think about beforehand.  Plus I think the approach to pain management really psyched me out and made me think I had a really low pain tolerance (hold an ice cube in your hand as a test for childbirth? seriously? It was cold and it hurt, so that means I'm going to have a hard time with natural childbirth?).  And it made me really fear going to the hospital because apparently everyone was going to be out to get me, and I needed my partner to be a lion? or tiger? or bear? or something, and he needed to be able to defend me with all his might against the evil staff.  Of course this is just how I remember the book and might not be all that accurate. shy.gif

So, I'm looking for something that has a little bit more of a positive approach to pain and to dealing with the hospital. Not so positive that it discusses orgasmic births or paints the hospital staff as perfect angels who can do no harm, but positive enough to not create any unnecessary fear.  Also, I'd love it if it discussed dealing with post birth issues like pain, tears, swelling, stitches, the first poop after tears and stitches blush.gif, etc, and had some self-care tips. Maybe that section should come with a warning not to read it until after birth.  lol.gif

Pregancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn by Penny Simkin.  Goes into depth about options, lots of ideas for different comfort measures and positions, etc.  And I suggest hiring a doula, but I may be a little bit biased ;)

Mama to Oliver 12.22.07 & Lucille 7.14.10

Try "The Birth that's Right for You" by Lisa Gould Rubin. Not exactly what you're asking for, but check it out.

Married to DH since 9/2001, mom to DS (1/2006) natural birth, DD1 (9/2008) transverse baby = c-section and DD2 (7/2012) transverse baby = rcs.

I second "Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn". Great book, lays out your options, unbiased.
