Yes, thats right she does not have an official name and I am beyond looking. I have prayed and dreamt and nothing is coming to me that my husband is alright with....We call her Lillia Fae which everyone loves except husband. He needs a name with more meaning.
So, heres some info. and maybe you can help.
We would love to honor our Ojibwe heritage. In the future we would like to have a naming ceremony but we are way too far away to do this now. WIthin the next year we may be able to do this. I still would love to give her an Ojibwe name beforehand.
She was born in April.
She is sweet calm but we can tell will be powerful in spirit and personality.
I had a dream of her as a mountain lion cub.
Sanskrit names also seem to be very meaningful.
She is darker skin with blue eyes.
I think one of the problems is that we are absolutely a mix of many cultures and have not much tradition to draw except what we make ourselves. I would love to be able to
name her a name that had a wonderful strong story behind it. Like the girl on whale rider.
Names that I like.
Oona - one or unity, love this name but would like to pair it with something meaningful like unity of....
These two are my favorites but...friends of our named their babes these.
She is our fourth child. Her sisters name is Stella.
Many religious traditions have the custom of giving a child two names -- an 'official' name and then the cultural name. Could you do that? So, for example, our Jewish friends have both an English name (which appears on their birth certificates) and a Hebrew name, which is used in the temple and for religious ceremonies. Could you give her an English-ish name for official documents and have an Ojibwe name that you choose later (or have given during a naming ceremony)?
There are some online dictionaries of Ojibwe, but I don't know if you want to do that if you hope to have a naming ceremony where she receives an official one. Nika is the word for Canada Goose, and Amik is beaver. Maybe Amika?
You might also try naming her after a famous Ojibwe woman, http://www.amazon.com/Holding-Our-World-Together-Community/dp/0670023248
If you don't name her soon, she's going to be Lillia. I think that's a beautiful name.
Love all the suggestions. My husband read my post and thinks its really silly that I asked you all this question. He doesn't know that the worn at Mothering rock!!!!! I love you ladies and your super smart. And I don't see anything wrong with asking other woman especially when naming another woman their ideas. So thanks you all for your advice.
I like Lillia Fae and when I look at her and try all different names nothing really fits like Lillia Fae. But, hubby does not agree. So, we just started calling her it hoping it would catch on but he is still thinking we will be finding another name. Jeesh. So, its his baby too and I just don't feel comfortable giving her a name that he doesn't agree with.
Leona - didn't get it at first but I see Lion and Oona combined. Thats pretty awesome. Just not sure I'm into this Lion vibe. Though its not my name.
LynnS6 - I do think that having a regular on the birth certificate name and a spiritual name would work. Thats the way it will probably work out. I looked at that book you posted, I may just get that book. It looks so interesting.
Coraline Mae - thats a random shout out - beautiful too. I've considered a name like Cora. I'm thinking the C sound is a little too hard for her. I can see her with a name more with a s, n, r, maybe p.
So, if he doesn't like it, is he working at finding her a different name that he's comfortable with? If he's not, then I'd say he's at some level OK with Lillia Fae.
