I am 6 months postpartum, and am still EBF. I am not losing any baby weight. I eat right and exercise. One of my midwives said I should have already lost weight, the other says I wont lose it until I stop BF. I'm starting to get nervous, my sister gained the majority of her "baby" weight while she was BF! Any experience with this one? Encouragement? Should I buy a new wardrobe!!??
It's not uncommon for women to lose weight while breastfeeding, but it is not uncommon at all for women to hold onto their baby weight until they stop breastfeeding, either. Part of the reason women gain weight during pregnancy is make sure they have the reserves to support a nursing. As long as you continue to eat nourishing foods, get exercise, and pretty much maintain rather than gaining, I'd assume your body is doing exactly what it needs to do for now.
When my daughter was around 8 or 9 months and beginning to eat a little bit more food (but most of her calories were definitely still from bm) was when I suddenly lost a bunch of weight without changing anything. I actually ended up thinner than I was when I got pregnant, and I wasn't technically overweight at all when I got pregnant. So, hmm, maybe just give it a little more time? Might want to do a food diary for a few days and make sure you're eating the way (and amount) you think you are.
Mama to a bilingual (Arabic/English) and cuddly 3 year old, and planning another peaceful homebirth in June.
