anyone have any info about having a natural vaginal delivery after a previous birth fistula injury? i'm being advised to plan a cesarean and it just seems like a cop-out. my fistula was vaginal/rectal and healed by itself without surgery... but i'd hate to have another, possibly worse one with the next birth. help!

She had a major fistula from her last baby. It was still slightly open a the begining of her labor. She had a vaginal birth. In fact it was never suggested that she have a c-section. I don't know a lot about the pros and cons of having a vaginal birth after a fistula. I can however suggest that you ask your doctor why they are suggesting a c-section. If they are trying to avoid the pain of a major tear, then that may not be a good reason. After all a c-section is MAJOR abdominal surgery! And who knows you may not even tear again. I would suggest that if you don't get the answers your looking for you seek out another care provider. Jen

I'm glad you posted this. I too had a 4th degree rectal/vaginal fistula from birthing my dd. However I did go to the hospital for surgery after dd was born. My M/W is confident that I can birth another baby with no problems. She specifically wants me to 1. "Breath the baby out" which will give the tissue plenty of time to strech and 2. Birth on my right side to put less pressure on my scar and she does think that birthing in the water will help (but may be hard to birth on side in water, not sure). She never breathed a word about C/S.

When are you due? I would love to hear from you after the baby is born and anyone else who has done this successfully.
