OK, so I'm a complete and total dork. I'm a Trekkie, and my favorite series is Voyager. I was watching the episode in the last season where B'Elanna keeps having false alarms with her labor. Tom asks the doctor if he can induce since B'Elanna's so sick of the false alarms and the doc says he wouldn't recommend it. I was thrilled when I heard that - it seems that in the future, doctors don't routinely induce just for discomfort.

Of course, later, I was a bit disappointed when all scenes of B'Elanna laboring showed her laying flat on her back on the biobed (she did push sitting up on her tailbone). I just kept reminding myself that I'm not familiar enough with Klingon physiology to make a judgement - for all I know, laying on the back is the best, most comfortable way for a Klingon to labor!

Star trek births are funny! Way back in the second season of TNG, Troi was impregnated by some alien and had a baby within a day or two. Great scene of birthing in a 24th century birthing chair (not flat on her back, no high tech equipment). And in DS9, when Maj. Kira had the baby, the birth stopped because she wasn't relaxed enough. They just sent her away and told her to come back when it was time again.

Wish 21st century OBs would learn from those 24th century folks! Then again, I've run into a few OBs that probably would use transporter techology to get the baby out....

OMG, I forgot about Troi's birth! I remember when Dr. Polaski offered her pain medications and said that it would in no way detract from the experience, Troi looked at her funny and said "I've felt no pain."

Wow, MotheringMe, you're really out of the ST universe, aren't you? Tom Paris and B'Elanna got married and had a little girl. I forget what they named her.

I only started watching Voyager this past year, so I'm slow going. I saw all the other series from start to finish... I can't believe she married Paris! I have a hard time picturing them together. Maybe I should netflix them this month while I'm not working and waiting for the baby.

with Tom Paris. they got married at the beginning of the final season, and the baby was born in the series finale. it was named Miral after B'Elanna's mother.

I loved how Data was Troi's doula. I thought the birthing chair was so cool.

I wanted to name DD Kathryn, but DH wanted another name.... Maybe the next baby can be named after my fav captain.

Tom and B'lanna's birth (first clip) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw_PN...elated&search=

I can't find a clip of Troi in labor, but did find one of her drunk.

Why do only Ocampa women give birth upright? And did you all know that the normal fetal position for an Ocampan child is footling breech? Anybody remember Tom Paris - "I can see the toes!" ??

I think it has to do with the fact the baby in the Ocampa is carried on the back. I remember the episode with Kess were she starts to enter the elogium to early and a pouch forms on her back.

I know that Ocompa women HAVE to give birth upright, but why don't the other species? Human, Klingon, Betazoid, all either on their backs or sitting on their tailbones.

Hey, did anyone, other than the tribbles, reproduce on TOS?

I LOVE Jadzia as well, but it SO does not go with our last name.

Lets list the births.
Keiko O'brien,
Deanna Troi,
Kira Nires (sp)
B'elana Torres

Anyone else?

Kes! It was in an alternate timeline (the father was Tom Paris) but it counts. I didn't know Kira had a baby! I was never a big DS9 fan.

Mile's and Keiko's baby was transported into Kira, so it wasn't really her baby. She just birthed it for them.
