Ok, so I am on my 2nd pg and at 32 weeks. I noticed a few weeks ago that my vulva appeared a little swollen and "open". DH also noticed last night and said I appear much different. Is this a normal occurance, or something to be concerned about? I think I will ask my mw to just look at it this week at my visit (not a cervical check, but just a visual exam).
Things just aren't closed up like normal and I don't remember this happening with my first pgcy.

I'm not completely sure, but the other week I googled "counter pressure" to see if I could get some pictures to show to my birth attendants here (weird I know, but there is a language barrier and we have found pictures work well in these circumstances).

I came across a set of birthing photos where the vulva looked as you just decribed, well before transistion or heavy labour, and I was a little thrown off but have heard since then that this is fairly normal. I then looked at my own (haven't done that in a long time!) and was also kind of shocked. I tried to tell my midwife that i was shocked by the appearance but she didn't seem phased in the least by it.

So....long answer short, I don't *really* know for sure but I'm fairly confident it's normal.

I've just noticed this on myself in the past few days. I'm only 21 weeks pregnant and my vulva seems quite swollen. It's not sexual arousal, and it is very uncomfortable. I've even been having trouble peeing. I don't have a hand mirror, so I can't look, but it feels different. I experimented with counter pressure in the bath this morning and it feels better with pressure. My next appointment I'll talk to my midwife about it. I think there is some kind of belt I can wear for counter pressure.

Tis the season, for hot apple cider!

Thank you for the replies. For further description, it seems as if the labia are spread apart wide and not closed, like normal. I can see "things" that I can't normally see. I know I should know what it is- my cervix? I will check around and find out.

Could it be varicose veins?

Could you be seeing the muscles of your vagina since your vulva is more open?

Could you be more juicy so things are more open? I know I get that way all through pregnancy and it just increases as I near the end.

What you describe does not sound out of the ordinary. Blood volume increases. Hormones increase. You can have swelling without "arousal". The baby is adding pressure and is maybe engaging. Your pelvis and ligaments are loosening. It makes sense that things would change. Also things may just look different because you've had a baby already. I know I don't look the same, and some days it seems to be more of a difference as others (for some of the above reasons).

I have that as well, pretty sure I did last time as well, although I do not know when it occured either time. I think it is just increased blood flow as dh made a comment when I was sitting on his back (to give a massage) that my crotch was even warmer than usual, it was freaking him out that it was so hot.

I do have one varicose vein, but that's not the issue. I checked it out again last night and it's not nearly as bad as I thought. My labia do close most of the way, they're just really swollen, which is normal. If it is my cervix that I'm seeing (I think it is, because it's bluish), it's not as low as I thought.
It does give me motivation to keep up the kegels, though!

Thanks.
