Hi all,
Another Q - with my first the midwife did fundal "massage" on me after the birth - it hurt like crazy! I remember reading somewhere that not only is it not helpful or necessary, but it could even make things worse. But I don't remember where I read that. Anyone have some info on that? Do they really need to do it?
Thanks!

I know it is helpful if you are trying to get a broken piece of the placenta out. Or to just help the uterus start to close, in the case of too much bleeding.

It is dangerous to do it before the placenta has detached. Other than that I don't think it makes things worse, though there is disagreement about whether it is always needed for every woman. For sure it can be a lifesaver to empty the uterus when needed.
