Someone posted some great links here not long ago to articles about how this program is panning out in Texas where Bush implemented it years ago. Aside from the obvious questions of giving social services money to a group that may force recipients to be prostletized to in exchange for services that are being paid for by tax dollars there is a serious issue of the wording of the law that tends to lower significantly the standards of both care and oversight of the care providers. I am searching but haven't hit the thread yet.

Found it faith-based social services Read the links.

Quote:
Bush’s executive order, along with House Resolution 7 by Rep. J.C. Watts, aim to expand the number of providers operating under less stringent rules, especially child care, welfare-to-work, and drug treatment facilities. The president charged the new office with identifying "all existing barriers to the participation of faith-based and other community organizations in the delivery of social services ... including but not limited to regulations, rules, orders, procurement, and other internal policies." In other words, deregulation is the primary goal, just like it was while Bush was governor.

I would also point out that *someone* is going to get to decide what is considered a REAL religion. For instance, Mr. Bush has stated that Wiccans do not deserve to be protected under the first admendment, nor will they receive funds for faithbased work - because they are not a real religion.

I guess I find it disingenious of charities that claim to be faith-based accepting government money. Doesn't their faith in God imply that they would rely on His provision?

I think that entangling government and religion tends to bring both down.

Thanks!

I dug up some stuff, too, and DH decides its a good idea in *theory* (his theory being you still have to follow the law!!!) but it would never work in practice.

I was getting really steamed! I think I may have sworn more than once trying to get him to BELIEVE ME, I KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT :LOL
