With the recent election for US president being over, the mods and admin feel there is a need for some changes in the War and Politics and Activism forums.

A forum focused on War and Politics on a Natural Family Living forum is bound to be primarily focused on the negative aspects of these things. We doubt while writing this that if one were looking at the board one would find three positive threads. This saddens us.

It isn't that anyone wants to do away with the board or that there haven't been amazing things posted here, but that we believe that changing things around a little will make it work better now that elections are over.

"War and Politics" will now be called "News and Current Events". This will, of course, include War and Politics but will also open the board to more of a variety of issues for discussion in that forum, encouraging more members to participate and hopefully dissolving the harsh divide that currently exists in War and Politics.

Also, to discourage the division in W&P, the tribe threads will be removed and will not return in any forum at MDC. As they stand, they do a disservice to MDC by identifying members of the various political sects and delineating for others between who is like and who is different, when the truth might be far more of a gray area.

Activism will change to "Take Action", this forum will be for action alerts and calls to action only. Letter writing campaigns, boycotts, and marches will be posted to that forum and all threads will be moderated. This will not be a forum for debate to take place.

Regarding the elimination of tribe threads, I'm just wondering if threads discussing particular political strategy will also be disallowed, such as this one:

Brainstorm: Strategies to win back our country in 2008

Will the threads already here be allowed to remain (aside from tribal of course) or will they be archived? Just wondering if I have some cutting and pasting to do as there is a lot of good info. here.

And could you please talk a bit more about what you all have in mind as far as positive threads.

HHmm..well there was a hope that the focus would be more diverse. Things like news, developments in science and other things of interest that may crop up will be hosted in this forum in addition to Politics.

The threads that are here will stay here. This will still be the place for political discussions we just wanted to add some more subjects to this board and clear up TAO a bit.

I don't know if that will end up with more positive threads but it will diversify the board a bit. It will also open up some more subjects for debate in this board.

Yes, chicagomom that sort of thread will be permitted.

Asfor when I guess that will just be when Cynthia puts in the name changes. If y'all want to start posting Current Events or News topics in addition to Political or War topic that is fine.

When did War and Politics come into being on Mothering? And, why?

War and Politics was opened after Sep 11, 2001 when posts regarding this topic and the war on Afghanistan were overrunning the Activism forum. Peggy agreed to opening a War and Politics subforum to relieve Activism, with the assumption that it was a temporary need. There was never a specific intent to host a forum on politics.
