Or so it seems! I remember when living in CA, I was using vinegar in the rinse on my diapers. Well, ever since moving I have had stinky diapers off and on--sometimes worse, sometimes better. Since my last move (4 months ago) it had gotten BAD. The only difference? Really soft water! I tried using baking soda (not washing soda) in the wash with the detergent---NO MORE STINK! Hooray!
So, my new theory? Vinegar for hard water, and baking soda for soft! I think it is a PH thing.
That's great!! I have very hard water and in the last months of diapering my dd I discovered that using Calgon water softener in the wash makes a huge difference.
I read that at Heather's site Punkinbutt http://www.punkinbutt.com/ a while ago, but forgot about it. She said vinegar could really cause a stink if you have certain minerals in your water. Glad you figured it out.
I have really soft water and only have stink from vinegar if I use the vinegar in the last rinse. It leaves stinky vinegar residue on them when I do that. If I use it in the first rinse, all if fine. I also use baking soda in my first rinse before the wash.
I don't think this is so much a one or the other solution based on hard or soft water. I think it's more that some people will find baking soda to be beneficial, while for others, it's not necessary or even counter productive. Same goes for vinegar. I think there are other factors at play besides the hardness or softness of the water, alone.
