Expecting a baby in 8 weeks. We have a few Charlie Banana pocket diapers, but we plan on mostly using prefolds and wool covers. I have a few questions:

1. We do not have a washer/dryer in our apartment. We usually do laundry one a week at my FIL's home. We are planning to handwash the diapers in our bathtub and hang dry. We do not want to use bleach or harsh chemicals. My MIL is worried that the diapers won't be sanitary if we handwash them. Is this true? Do you have any suggestions for keeping diapers sanitary?

2. We are planning to use wool diaper covers. Any suggestions on a good brand? Thinking of using GroVia. Cheapest I've seen and good reviews.

3. How many infant prefolds should we start out with? We are expecting a large baby (possibly up to 9 lbs.). Should we stock up on infant size diapers or wait and see?

Thank you! blowkiss.gif

If you plan to hand wash get flats. They are versatile, easy to hand wash and dry quickly. Prefolds take forever to dry and would be difficult to hand wash IMO. Look at Green Mountain diapers for flats.

I wouldn't waste money on infant cloth diapers. Unless you plan on having a bunch of kids and small babies.

I have three dozen. It seems to work out good with one child and wash everyother day. Now we have two in diapers and wash them every night.

I do bleach ours. My dd urine is very acidic and we found if we don't use bleach she gets burns when she wets the diaper.

I use bum genius detergent, it seems to work well. As far as how clean you will get the diapers... Well at first if you bf the poop is water soluble so it shouldn't be a problem. Once solids are started you may been to use a washer machine.

You might want to check out Etsy for wool covers. They usually have a lot that are up cycled from old wool covers. I've never looked at the prices (I knit my own,) but sure they must be cheaper than Grovia. Unfortunately the hand knit once are usually expensive even on etsy.
