Hi all, I am new to the diapering forum! I have a daughter I cloth diapered part-time, 5 years ago. I used only BumGenuis 3.0 then. I have most of them left, and plenty of microfiber inserts, but the diapers themselves are pretty shot- mostly the velcro (but will certainly be in circulation when the time comes.) I'm expecting a boy in March and have some questions to get started again...

I don't *love* pocket diapers. I'm familiar with prefolds and flats, but I worry about absorbency or bulkiness to make the diapers hold enough for heavy wetters. Is that just the nature of the beast? Is hemp the best?

I've never had much practice with diapering boys, does it make a difference what kind you chose? Like do they leak in different places than girls, making certain styles or folds better/worse?

I may be interested in a few AIO for convenience, but not all the time use. I can't imagine spending more than $200 at a time, which is why I want to get some early! My sister used GroVia hybrids (I think-- the soaker snapped in kind), but they seem to only be velcro now. I did like those, but prefer snaps.

What are the best options and brands for a mom preferring (but open!) something not-pocket style, has snaps vs. velcro, ideally of the one-size variety? But not crazy bulky or too expensive, to make it a little easier ;)

Wow, I really feel like a crazy, overwhelmed pregnant lady today. I have researched, but I think it makes me a little crazier. Thanks in advance!

We really like these which are a all-in-2 with the snap-in soaker (purchased separately) and similar the the gro-via your sister has. But the gro-via do come in snaps as well -

Flats - we used them with our youngest when she was a newborn. They worked pretty well. I don't think they got overly soaked. Probably a little less bulky than a prefold. Well, I actually made them from flannel, so not sure about the ones you can buy. I think there are lots of different folds, probably some better for boys, but we used the origami fold I think.

If you are looking for an inexpensive AIO these and these look good but I haven't tried them.

Thank you for the suggestions! After I posted, I looked more into the Kiwi Pie diapers and have gotten a bit attached...they seem awesome. I may do a combo of those or similar and some kind of snap-in. I didn't spend a fortune last go round, and I am nervous about the initial expense this tie, but I know it's worth it in the end.

I only have one DS so I don't have any comparisons to offer, but I thought I'd tell you my experiences so far.

For the newborn stage I preferred flats with PUL covers.  At that point you're changing diapers so often you don't really need something super absorbent and flats can be folded many ways and are quick and easy to wash and dry.  Covers with gussets help contain leaks.  Up until DS got savvy enough to start trying to take off his own cover I preferred hook and loop because I could always get a better fit.

At around 5 or 6 months DS developed diaper rash from being in a PUL cover for too many hours at night.  That's when I discovered wool.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE our wool!  When we are home during the day DS wears a prefold with some kind of wool (longies if it's cool, shorties or a soaker if it's warm out).  At night he wears fitteds with wool.  When we go out DS wears a prefold with PUL.  All our PUL is snaps now - much harder for DS to remove.

I have had a few pocket diapers - I just prefer the simplicity of prefolds.  Plus, I'm a firm believer that straight up cotton is best.  It's easiest to wash and dry, holds up well, and has fewer stink issues than other fabrics.

There's my 2 cents.  Hope it helps!

I like the BestBottoms a lot, although they don't work very well for babies with a long rise (as both of mine have had).  I think they are a really nice alternative to pockets, and you don't need nearly as many covers as you do for pockets, since you can reuse the covers similar to using prefolds and covers. I'm thinking of trying some GroVia hybrid ones if I can find out about the fit.

I can't speak to the girl vs. boy issue as I have only had boys! :)
