I stripped and stripped. I have been washing diapers non-stop for two days. My fitteds smelled clean and fresh so I dries them, they stank like high h#ll as soon as the pee hit though. At the same time my pockets and covers and stuff were drying after about 8 rinses, I took them out of the dryer and they stink too. Sigh.

My no-name dish detergent is no good I hear so when the girls wake up we are off to buy dawn. Does it matter if it's antibacterial?

From now on I am never ever using laundry detergent on my diapers.

how does this sound..
prewash with 1tbsp washing soda and some TTO should this be cold?
then hot wash with a squirt can someone be more specific about the amount of dawn
rinse on cold with nothing but hope
dry as usual.

I can't do this stripping crap any more it consumes days of my life. :

Is it the diaper smelling badly, or the urine itself ?

Canadian mom to Boo (Aug '02), Bug (Aug '04) and Bear (Dec '06).

their pee smelled fine yesterday and they are breastfed except for about a tbsp of rice cereal on most days so I'm pretty sure pee is fine and diapers not.

I read here at MDC that anitbacterial is not good for dipes....something about bleaching them due to the anitbacterial ingredient... let me see if I can locate that thread.

damn, they only had anti-bacterial dawn. why must this be so difficult. I'll use it for now I guess but keeping my eyes open for plain dawn if it makes a difference.

I do a plain prewash (rinse and spin) on Cold
Then a full Hot wash/cold rinse with Baking Soda (not washing soda--I read somewhere that baking soda was better for dipes). We use almost 1/2 cup. Yes, that's a lot, but I read on here a while back to use between 1/4 and a 1/2 cup of baking soda. I use a few drops of TTO in the hot wash.
Then, I sometimes run it through a final rinse/spin

I use Dawn sometimes and put about a teaspoon of it in the regular wash (hot). When I use this though, I have to do two full cycles to get out the bubbles

Lately, I've been doing one wash a week with regular "All" detergent, (two cycles to get the bubbles out) and then using the Baking soda/TTO the rest of the time. This seems to be working to keep the stinkies away.

Also, I've been microwaving my inserts (no snaps or elastic) in a ziploc freezer bag (make sure the inserts are wet though ). This was the instant fixer for my stinky hemp issues

Good luck. Stripping is terrible!

A while back someone posted about using vinegar in the prewash too, to neutralize the urine. HTH

Thanks Mariah. I was thinking baking soda might be better but I haven't found any information.

I have heard of boiling diapers too but I think that is only for inserts and prefolds - no snaps no elastics.
