newbie to cd with a question - why a cold water soak first and not a hot water soak??? don't you want to kill the germs, not just drown them???? and i am using biokleen's bleach alternative with grapefruit seed extract, is that bad?????

I do a cold rinse (or a cold short wash), not a soak, to rinse and spin out the pee and poo before I wash in hot.

We have coin laundry, so was wondering if you can do a cold soak in the sink?

Hot water sets stains. So that's why you wash with cold first. I would not do a *soak* though, I would just do a cold/cold wash followed by a hot wash (and then an extra rinse or two). Soaking can soak the stink right into the diapers, and I really don't see what good it would do otherwise (to have your diapers soaking in dirty water). We used a laundromat for a little over a year with our cds, and I found that doing a cold wash/rinse in the sink first eliminated the need to do one in the washer. I still had to do two washes in the washer since there wasn't any "extra rinse" option, but I'd do two hot washes (1st with detergent, 2nd without) if the diapers had already been cold washed in the sink. The washer is much more convenient, though, if you don't have to use coins.

Mindfully mothering SIX kids (ages 4, 5, 7, 8, 11 & 11) in a small house with a lot of love.
