Is there such a thing as a prefold that is really as soft as they all are advertised to be? Is there any difference between cotton prefolds? Where do you get yours and do you like them??

I need another dozen. So far I have bought Indian Cotton prefolds from Weebunz, Indian Cotton prefolds from Little Lions, and Chinese prefolds from greenmountain. They all feel the same. None of them feel very soft and all are a bit pilly. Is that just the way it is with prefolds, or does someone sell prefolds that are actually super soft?

I know I could spend a fortune for Under the Nile Egyptian cotton but they only seem to come in one size, and I want small ones. I know I could get hemp fleece but you can't use a snappi on those and I don't want to use pins.

Thanks!

Organic PFs are, in my experience, much softer than non-organic, and stay soft (unlike my hemp fleece, FWIW). I haven't tried NTN PFs; I have FunOrganic! (I only have one and they are being discontinued... sob!), and Tiny Birds colorgrown. My other PFs are Thirsties, some bleached, some unbleached; the unbleached are softer than the bleached, but definitely not as soft as the organic.

If you can afford a few of the TB colorgrown, you won't regret it. They are beautiful.

Oh, and ETA: I just got my first greenmountain PF. I haven't finished prepping it yet but even if it doesn't get really soft, I love that it is wider and shorter than most PFs. So you may find that your greenmountain dipes are very good to have even if they aren't super-soft.

Unbleached cotton is definitely softer than bleached cotton, and Indian cotton is softer than other cottons.

Under the Nile prefolds are soft and absorbent, and they do come in two sizes.

I think how soft prefolds are really depends on the hardnesss/softness and other factors in your local water supply. We get many returned washed prefolds back and their stiffness varies a lot!

You can use Calgon water softener and vinegar in the rinse cycle to soften them. When local customers feel the difference in softness between the unbleached Indian prefolds and bleached Chinese prefolds, they invariably choose the Unbleached Indian cotton. So, there is a difference, but I don't think prefolds are "silky soft". Definitely soft, but I guess it's all relative! Good luck!

I have found that using a fabric shaver to shave the pills off makes them feel softer as well

My Thirsties bleached prefolds (Chinese, I think) are MUCH softer than any of my unbleached Indian prefolds. :

So NO, not all prefolds are the same!!

The organic ones are made of French terry rather than twill, so they'll be softer.

IPFs tend to be softer than CPFs, but the CPFs tend to be more durable. All prefolds will soften with washing and wearing. My CPFs are substantially softer now than they were when I got them 4 months ago.

Depends on the brand, actually. You can get organic cotton prefolds made of organic cotton interlock, organic cotton velour, organic cotton fleece, organic cotton sherpa, organic cotton french terry, organic cotton twill, or organic cotton birdseye. Possibly other knits/weaves of organic cotton as well.

I like Indians because they are much softer. But my thirsties colors are pretty nice too. I can't do CPFs. Every brand I've tried is rough.

interesting. All the ones I've seen so far are the terry type. If I could get organic ones that are the same as my CPFs I would, but I;ve not seen ones like that.
