ok ladies. this may seem ridiculous but i am having a hard time deciding wether or not to babysit my best friends daughter. she is 1 and uses sposies. i have a moral objection to disposables and the thought of changing however many of them a day and putting them out with my garbage (which i have been so proud is under 1/4 can a week, with 2 adults and 2 children) bugs me for some reason.
i tried and tried to get her to use cloth but she says it's too much work, but then again this is the same woman who chose formula over breastfeeding so her husband could get up with the baby at night.

i dunno ladies, advice please. we really really need the money but my tummy turns when i think about the diapering issue . :Puke

maybe you all can help me see it in a different light.

*update*
i spoke with her voiced my concerns, and the plus side (being money, health and environmet) she said she would be more than happy ot get a few packs of prefolds and some covers. but she needs me to be with he so she doesn't grab the wrong things. she is quite happy that her child will be recieving the benefits of cloth without her having to deal with it. lol. well that's my best friend... thanks ladies i appreciate all the ideas and support.

Use cloth while she is at your house. You will have 1 diaper / day in your trash. Re- posie her when her mom comes.

Well, I guess you could offer to use some of your own cd's, assuming you have some. But you would have to wash them aswell.

Or just send the disposables home in her bag at the end of the day - no reason for them to go into your garbage.

I know it's hard to make other people's choices work for them when you are opposed!!

Well, if you have the right size of CD, you can just use your own on her while you sit, and send her home with a sposie....

As for your situation... even if you have to use sposies while you babysit - it's not like you are adding to the waste in the world. If the little girl is being watched by someone else, she'll be going through the same number of diapers. So - you can babysit and do something good for your family by getting a little extra money, or you can pass...and... have your morals intact?

My mom (who does my day care) HATES CDs. She just refuses to use them - she can be extremely stubborn. But my son is not sensitive to sposies, so I let it go. He arrives with cloth, leaves with cloth. I pick my battles, and that is not one of them.

actually you know what, i think i'm going to ask her mother to go buy a pack of prefolds and a few greber covers for while she is here, and do it that way. that was a great suggestion (cd'ing her while she is here). i'll just let her mom know that while she is with me she will be CD, she probly won't oppose since it will also be saving her big bucks on diapers too. hopefully she won't start to object to sposies at home . thanks ladies, great minds. :

That's what I would do. Make it a condition of watching her. And you'll get the added bonus of her mama seeing how much healthier cloth is her her tiny tush!

And since it'll cut down on her sposies use, thus expense, why wouldn't she go for it?

I second, third , the whole cd at your house. I do this with a little boy I baby sit. His mom was not keen on the idea at first but now she likes that I use the cloth. It has cut down on his diaper rashes and in the long run saves her money. I am obsessive about changing diapers and he was getting changed about every 60 or 70 minutes. She was starting to panic about being able to buy diapers. She now just laughs when she sees his huge bottom and has even learned how to pin a diaper on him.

If your family needs the money, then you shouldn't hesitate to watch your best friend's baby! Its a win/win situation! You get extra money and your friend's baby gets loving care from a familiar person instead of going to daycare or something (of course daycare can be loving too). I agree that you could cloth diaper her while she is at your house. I wouldn't make an issue about it though. If you have already educated your friend on the benefit of CD, and she has deciced against it, then there is no reason to press the issue. Just tell her that as long as she is at your house she will be getting a taste of the fluffy-butt lifestyle. If she oppses in any way to buying the prefolds herself, then just buy them on your own.

i would also use cds while she was at my house...it's not only the issue of adding more waste to the world...it's also the issue of actually creating it myself. i know i could suck up an extra diaper load during the week, so i would.

i say go for it.

(oh and all the better if you can get her to pay for the diapers or buy a thing of laundry detergent now and again, er something. i would say its not worth it to press the issue but it's worth it to try!)

living light husband wife loving life two sons to birth for our light loving earth. :
