A slightly random question:

Our baby (7 months) has been desperate for months to taste/such on/chew his bblp. We've taken it away over and over and over (eww! It's a potty!) and he cries until we can distract him. So I'm curious: Is there anyone who does let their baby taste their potty?

Ewwww! I do not allow that.  I would just redirect to something more appropriate.

It wouldn't be my first choice but it's also not my hill to die on.

My 7 month old tries to chew on the toilet lid. I try to keep his feet against it so he can't reach it to his mouth. I know he will beat this system sometimes so I wipe it off with a soapy washcloth more often than I used to.

Most of the icky stuff goes into the potty. You could try tracing the bear onto a milk carton or something and see if that interests him, but I don't think it will hurt him if it's clean.

Ha, Seraf. My wife and I had been wondering specifically if your 7 month old was allowed to chew on his potty. Are you still using the bblp at all during the day or are you exclusively using the toilet now? The thing I don't like about using the toilet is that his hands end up all over everything and then I have to wash them and that takes more time. Maybe you keep your toilet cleaner than we keep ours (If so, what is your trick?). We have him facing out on the toilet (using the bb potty seat). Are you holding him over the toilet or using a seat? Am I hijacking my own thread?

Jnet: I agree with the eww!

My toilet can't be cleaner than yours. We use the BBLP for nights/ first pee of the day but otherwise he won't use it for me. He still uses it for DP. Poops go in the toilet if I'm lucky. Out the sides of his diaper and into his mouth if I'm not.

I will have to get a picture of how I told him. We do wash hands because he grabs the pee stream anyway.

Does your baby not want to put everything in his/her mouth? If so, I'm impressed.

Seraf: I would love to see a picture of how you hold him. Any tips on how to easily wash a baby's hands? Our little guy would also like to eat the water, and the faucet, and the soap, and....

Escher, here is a bad video of hand washing. You can see the second hand better.  The soap is on the far side of the sink from him and there is nothing much in his reach. In public bathrooms I kind of support his chest across one forearm and use that hand to control his hand that I'm washing and the other hand to actually wash.

th_1339034027.jpg sitting across my leg nursing because he was tired, freaked out by the loud public bathroom and desperately needed to poop.

So we face the back of the toilet.  Sometimes bum down in, sometimes sideways, sometimes I squat in front and perch him on the toilet seat. in that last picture I would normally have my hand under his thigh, but he grabbed his foot so I grabbed the picture.  If I didn't hold his legs in that position he would dip his feet in the toilet.

He is so cute. Do you constantly want to nibble on his arms?

Feet in the sink, sitting on a counter. I like it. And you get a little bit of a bonus footbath there too.

So it looks like sometimes you're using a baby seat on the toilet but sometimes you just hold him? Why do you have him face the back of the toilet?

p.s. What is the black design on your toilet?

Constantly want to nibble, yes.

Those are all holds, if you look at the back of the toilet tank you will see the baby seat fills more of a supervisory role.

I face him to the back because that's just what I'm used to doing, it's what we did when he was too small to sit and it's faster than putting a baby seat on, turning him around and taking the baby back off. We have also been in something of a pause, so if he is going to arch his back, I feel like its safer if his back is toward me.

The design on the back is just little pieces of electrical tape. We put it there for high contrast visual interest for him to look at as a tiny newborn. And it started as a few dots and I added to it every so often to keep it interesting. Then when he was 5 or 6 months he figured out that he could peel off the tape if I loosened the corner a bit. So if he needs to poop but doesn't want to sit still I will loosen a corner and he can pick and pull at it for a couple of minutes until he is done.

And foot bath, yeah, those are in his mouth as much as his hands are and he crawls now. I figure a little rinsing is a good thing.

Although our DS did want to chew on many things, we were lucky that he never actually wanted to chew on the potty! We used to keep a vinegar spray bottle beside it though, to keep it pretty clean (until he got bigger and wanted to spray vinegar all the time- to this day he cleans the toilet a lot more than I do!). I agree with Seraf, if you keep the potty clean, it really isn't any worse than chewing on any other plastic, but then, chewing on plastic is not such a great thing...

Haven't run into that problem, but no.  Kids are not allowed to taste the toilet or potty.
