Am I making progress?

We really new to elimination communication. We have started by giving our LO plenty of nappy free time and watching him for signals that he wanted to go. We picked up on the signals would put him on the potty but then nothing, then as soon as he was off the potty, then he would pee. We have had some luck catching pee pee in the potty after he has woken from a nap but it is not consistent because sometimes he does not want to sit on the potty he wants to move around, but he does pee very quickly after. However the last couple of days he has been trying to sit on his potty by himself (incorrectly, but trying) but not needing to go pee pee. Also he has been pulling at his nappy after he has pee pee, but not all the time. Are we making progress even though it does not feel like it at times?
