Hi everyone -
I'm a student midwife almost through with a 2 year didactic program, and I am seriously considering going to Jamaica for a month or so and working in one of the many clinics there. Has anyone done this or know of any information or peoples experiences? I know Shari Daniels has a program as well as many others. Any feedback would be great! Thank you!

I'm not so sure that Shari Daniels has a program anymore. I know that there definitely are programs in Jamaica, but like I said, not sure that she has one. Have you ever considered going to Texas, like to Maternidad La Luz in El Paso?

Shari's birth center in florida is under much heat beacuse of a babies death and her program in Jamaica has been discontinued by the Jamaician Goverment because of a maternal death. The program I went with is www.JamaicaBirth.com and I was very pleased with it. I went for 3 weeks in Sept (their highest birth month) and learned alot and got a lot of births. My friend who went with me got all her births and come back and took our states exam and passed and became a LM. Carlene Canady is the woman who runs it she is a LM in Florida and a Jamaican Midwife too. Good Luck!

Was interested in becoming one, but the politics and in fighting with midwives has run me away. I was in South Carolina when I wne to Jamiaca, now in New Jersey.
good luck on your journey

My dearest friend in Utah went to Jamaica at the end of her training to get some births under her belt. She went for 2 wks and she came back literally glowing! She had an incredible time and she said all the moms she helped were wonderful.
She came back with alot of experience and alot of happy memories!
I would believe that she would definitely recommend it. She said the people there were very friendly, welcoming, and the experience was very positive!
