Hello!

I am just getting back into attending births after a long hiatus (I got my training in 1997, attended one birth, and then University life intervened and I didn't have the time to be "on call" for several years). In the meantime I have gotten my training as a pregnancy massage therapist, took a childbirth educator training, and am working on my certification in infant massage.

I figured this would be a great time to get back into attending births, because my work schedule as a massage therapist is somewhat flexible and DH is wonderfully supportive. This is what I have ALWAYS wanted to do (with an eventual eye towards midwifery).

So, a couple of months ago I put up a listing offering my services for free. I have to document at least two births to get certified in the U.S. as a childbirth educator, and just felt more comfortable offering my services for free the first few times out, as I gain experience and some birth wisdom.

In the last week I have been INUNDATED with client contacts--four clients between now and the beginning of August. I am thrilled to be starting my doula practice, but wondering what to do about paperwork and appropriate record-keeping. After doing some online research I did come across the software Doula Office, but am wondering if it is worth the $30 + S&H. There is also an e-book out there that claims to include some client record-keeping forms, or I always have the option of creating my own forms--which would take a bit more time, but would allow me to customize my intake paperwork, etc.

Any advice from experienced doulas? Has anyone used Doula Office and loved it/hated it? Had any luck with creating your own paperwork? I would appreciate ANY words of wisdom you can provide!

Thanks!

I have my own paperwork. Let's see- i have a contract, writing a birth plan, my own business card, post partum tips sheet, a client info sheet (this is a 1/2 sheet with their phone, address, midwife info and directions to thier house. i print this on bright paper to make it easy to find.), and a question- type sheet that i fill out asking questions like what they want me to do, who else will be there, how they relax, etc...

Then I have sheets that I didn't write. An episiotomy sheet, some lll breastfeeding sheets, one on circumcision, and one about birthing positions. Oh and also a "dads and doulas" handout.

This works fine for me. I give them a folder with my "logo" on the front, and I have a separate folder that i keep my notes and client info sheets in.

If you'd like, I can e-mail you my stuff. It might give you ideas- and I don't care if you use any of it yourself. Just pm me here if you're interested.

Have fun getting back into birth!

I create my own forms, and then I use some copies which were included in my doula training binder. I have also found BEST DOula has some great ideas for forms. If you go to their site you will find their PDF files of available documents. http://www.bestdoulas.com/

I enjoy creating my own, though, and being able to change them as the need arises.

I LOVE Postpartum Doula Office from www.birthsource.com (they have Birth Doula Office too). It was completely worth the money to me not to have to create all my own forms.
