Well, I had finally, after much soul searching, decided that I couldn't ignore the call I felt to become a midwife. But then, since I'm not sure I want to go to a college, I was faced with the challenge of finding an apprenticeship. Most of the midwives around here won't take an apprentice who hasn't had any formal midwifery college training. Then, last week, a friend of mine was contacted by a midwife she knew. Her apprentices had all either started their own practices or left the field, and she was looking for women who had just decided to step foot on the path to midwifery. So, I contacted
her and we met and she agreed to take me on! I guess it's not a really exciting story , but it was just one of those times when everything fell into place!

Congratulations!!! Yeah! Will it be full time or part time? How many births/month? What an exciting time for you!

I will be doing probably between 2-3 births a month, plus prenatals, so I guess that's about 3/4 time !

You know, that's exactly what happened with me to, the apprenticehship just dropped into my lap. I'd just started studying with AAMI and hadn't planned on apprenticing for several years, till my kids were older. But then I thought....how often does an opportunity like that present itself ?!?

Congrats!

That is wonderful. I would love that opportunity.

Can someone tell me what is involved in midwifery apprenticeship? How long is it generally? Do you pay the midwife, attend for free, or do you earn any money during this time (in other words, how to mothers who were earning a living before hand, support their families?).

What is the process for studying, then getting certified (passing state certification)?

Thanks, and good luck! Sounds like you will be catching babies very soon.
