Hi everyone !!!!
I have been wanting to start midwifery school for the last 5 years and since we only plan on having one more babe, the time is soon approaching.
My understanding is that in Florida I need to attend a school with a specific accredidation to become liscenced in FL.
(I don't plan to become a nurse first)
So does that only leave the 'traditional school of midwifery' in Gainsville??
Are their other direct entry midwife schools in FL.
What about distance learning schools. I have checked out AAMI and that would be the best for my family, but will FL allow that???

When our lease is up at the end of the year we will be moving to where every necessary, so that when we the time is right I can attend school.....

Thanks so much for reading!!!

It's a long involved conversation. Would you prefer to email me?

Basically, you have to either attend a school that is "approved" by the state (currently Miami-Dade Community College or Florida School of Traditional Midwifery). The other option, which is not so clear cut is that you can legally apply through a process called "licensure by endorsement." This is where a midwife who is licensed in another state can apply to have her credentials evaluated and then take a 4 month course, which is not currently offered anywhere, and then be a midwife.

This is hopefully going to be solved soon.

As far as other options go, if you are thinking that you would like to take distance ed courses, be sure that they are from a MEAC accredited school, as Florida would look for MEAC credentials to prove "equivalency."

Email me at if you have any other questions, or would like to know about distance ed MEAC accredited schools.
