My sister told me today that she is being induced Friday. She has GD, very borderline from what I understand. She is on 2 Units of insulin in the am because her morning blood sugars have been in the 85-95 range. She is measuring on track and her baby does not appear to be large for gestational age even to her over eager (IMO) OB. Her OB has agreed to "let" her go to her due date instead of being induced at 38 weeks.

Is that true? Do most OBs induce all GD patients at 38 weeks and never let them go overdue? They scared the crap out of her talking about the placenta degrading at a faster rate. Basically she thinks at 40 weeks her placenta will stop working. I pointed out to her that this is a common problem in our family and NONE of us have ever had a large baby or any problems going beyond 40 weeks. I doubt I can change her mind, but I'd like to at least know the norm as I'm in my L&D rotation in nursing school right now.

I'm insulin dependent as well. My OB wanted to induce me at 39 wks and I went for a second opinion from a specialist and he said he'd 'let' me go until 40 wks.

My plan is this: If I have good NST/BPPs and great movement from the baby at 40 wks I'm going to deny induction b/c there are no signs of a failing placenta.

I have been induced 3 times and had GD twice. I just talked to my doctor at my first prenatal visit about this last Friday She said she was taught in Medical School that the cut off for a diabetec pregnancy is 38 weeks. I was induced 38 1/2 weeks, 38 weeks, and 38 weeks. I told her I would like to go to 39 weeks. She said she could work with that, if everything was good.
