My name is Joy, I am a single mother living in CA. My ex threatened to kill my boyfriend and I at an informal mediation held by a mutual friend and I was told by the mediator and my boyfriend that my ex made several threats to come kill us in our home in our sleep. I filed for an emergency custody change and the court granted it. We have court tomorrow and on Friday I received paperwork from my ex-husband's lawyer which denied everything that he said and objected to all my concerns. I am so scared of going to court tomorrow without legal representation. How do I get text messages off my phone that would implicate him? He is trying to say that my home is unsafe because it is not in county code. I live in an intentional rural community on a farm and the children are so happy here. Has anyone gone through this process? How do you cope with the stress? How much should I tell the kids? They know nothing.

Joy, you should be reporting these threats to the police, and taking practical steps to assure your safety.

Unfortunately, I think one of those steps should be to avoid putting your information on the internet.  It's publicly viewable and I think it's highly likely that your ex has followed you here.  Please call a local domestic violence organization and do what you need to do to stay safe.

Wow. Report all you can but unfortunately a lot of his threats may not be taken serious until he does something. I'm hoping he blows it at court which may result in some action from the judge/law enforcement. Hope it all works out.
