Hi all,
I tried to find this in the archives but didn't have any luck. i just came back from the medical supply store where the pharmacist, after an embarrassing interaction (!), gave me a BD 5 cc (5 ml) Syringe, latex free, sterile, with no needle. How do I know if this is the right kind to use?? I think i read on one of the forums that the syringe should be 4 inches long, by my measurement this syringe is only a little over 2 inches with the plunger pushed in and 3.5 inches with the plunger pulled all the way out. does this mean it will be too short to get close enough to DP's cervix? this is all so nerve wracking! I am very scared i will somehow mess it up and get too close to the cervix or not close enough, or that air bubbles will get in there (i read this online too!).
Thanks so much for any help,
L and DP(who are finally, after a year and half of planning and negotiations, getting ready to insem with a KD at home in about 12 days from now!)

That syringe should be perfect. We used the same thing (free from the pharmacist -- don't remember what our "line" was to get it). That size will let you get it in far enough for sure. Relax, take your time, and don't worry!

Megincl, Thank you so much for your quick and reassuring response! At first I tried to tell the pharmacist that I didn't want to tell him what it was for, but then it got very confusing so i broke down and told him and he was totally nice about it, but i was pretty embarrassed.

One other question - can we just re-use this syringe (we plan to do 3 or so insems over the course of a week) or should i throw it away and use a new one each time?

That size sounds fine and don't worry too much about bubbles you can just tap them out. Good luck with insems! The ladies who post on the Queer conceptions thread are extremely welcoming and knowledgeable if you have more questions or need a distraction during the dreaded 2WW

That syringe sounds totally fine.

You can reuse it over and over, just rinse it with water, nothing else, and let it air dry, it might help to pull the plunger piece completely separate from the barrel piece.

Just make sure it's completely dry between uses, as sperm don't like water very much.

Good luck!

Can you also use a dosage syringe? I have a 10ml dosage syringe that I got from my local big box. Or does it have to be one for needles from the pharmacy? Thanks.

PS--Good luck citygirl. :-)

Thanks all, for your responses and well wishes. Kelly, i found this link which makes it sound like an oral medicine syringe is fine - i think that is what you are referring to:

We used a 5cc baby oral medicine syringe and it worked perfectly (asked or it at the pharmacy as was about 20 cents or something).

One tip about the bubbles...turn the syringe upside down (open side up) after you have drawn up the sample and tap it until the bubble rise to the top, then slowly push them out. I was also paranoid about the bubble being injected into me!

We had a couple of syringes and re-used them alternating them to make sure they were dry. We just washed them with dr. bronner's and made sure we rinsed well and let them air dry.

We used various types of syringes, procured from various places, and it just happened that on all three times that it worked, we used small animal feeders from the pet store--and we did reuse our various syringes--washed with (dish) soap and water and completely air dried in between uses--taking the plunger out does help with the air drying (and for the record, all of the successful tries were with syringes that had been re-used and cleaned in this manner).

Also, though we also tapped out the bubbles in the way that carmen358 described, I'm pretty sure the big worry with the bubbles is if you are doing ICI or IUI, and not just a regular vaginal insemination--my understanding is the dangerous thing would be the air going into your uterus, but unless you're inserting the syringe right into the cervix (which you wouldn't want to do with unwashed sperm anyway) I don't think it would be a big issue.

Good luck!

we used the same syringe and it worked perfectly. the only issue we had was that after KD had "fasted" for a few days, the 5cc was not big enough to hold all the semen. we ended up pulling it out and refilling. that was just the first insem. on insem 2, 3, and 4 the 5cc syringe was the prefect size.

We used a 5ml oral syringe (free from the pharmacy!) too. Just washed with soap and water and totally dried in between uses. Average output is 3-5 ml, but it's nearly impossible to get that last little bit out of the cup. We've never had issues with volume fitting.
We do the tapping to get the bubbles out too - they eventually rise to the tip, and then you can just depress the plunger a little to get them out.
The length isn't an issue either - just use your finger to find the cervix, slide the syringe in along side and depress that plunger. It all works even if it's not quite long enough to comfortably depress the plunger from outside the vagina.
Good luck!!!!

For greater things are yet to come...

We also used the oral medicine dispenser type of syringe which was free from our pharmacist. He gave us a whole paper bag full.

The only trouble with bubbles is that if they get pushed into your vagina, the sperm is more likely to get displaced and ooze out. There's no danger involved with a home IVI and air.

I found that trying to tap and push the bubbles out didn't work for me; it was just too gooey and wasted precious time! We fixed that by just not depressing the plunger the whole way - just enough to get the semen out.

My husband and I used a 30cc syringe. It made things so much easier for us. The 5 cc and the 10 cc were just too small. Everyone is different. Not everyone is the same size down there.
