Woohoo! It's November! We've got a shiny new thread!

If any of your information is not correct, please post in bold and I will update it.

I thought it might be nice to start our new thread out with some get-to-know-you questions, since we've got a lot of new folks(!!!). So, answer as many of the follow questions as you'd like. (I know we all have different levels of comfort with sharing things online. No pressure on any of it.)

Name/Username?

Who is in your family?

What pronouns do you and your family members use?

If you're pregnant, when are you due?

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them.

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do?

If you stay home with your kids, what do your days tend to look like?

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working/doing the grunt work of parenting?

Looking forward to getting to (better) know everyone!

Name/Username?

Sara

Who is in your family?

Sara 31

Sara 25

Osha 9

Ari 7

Shay 1

Soren 6 months

What pronouns do you and your family members use?

she, she, he, she, he, he

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them.

O loves science and has hair down to his rump.

A loves crafting so much that she gets tape for most gifting occasions and she was born in the caul.

S loves all things edible, can open almost any lid and was born in the car.

SD loves his siblings and is thrilled to be able to sit for short periods of time.

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do?

I am a nurse in home health. I only work with one patient so my job isn't terribly exciting.

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working/doing the grunt work of parenting?

I like to sew and bake.  I mostly sew for the kids at this point. I have recently gone off wheat, so baking is on the back burner right now.  I'm excited for all the winter activities I missed last winter with it being so warm and having a newborn.  Ice skating and sledding sound pretty entertaining. I also love science and design.

And Shay went to a playdate with Sara, the big kids are sorting their candy and Soren is finally asleep and so it's time for me to clean.

Today is Shay's birthday!

He's come such a long way!

oops, somehow i missed this bit before.

Name/Username? nosrêves  (it means "our dreams" in French, and when i first joined MDC for the Queer Conceptions board, it seemed an apropos username....actually, it still does joy.gif)

Who is in your family?  M. (40), F. (42) and our two feline furbabies.

What pronouns do you and your family members use? she/she or elle/elle depending on which language we're speaking.

If you're pregnant, when are you due?  the midwives here in France say the 28th of December (41w + 2), but all the North American sites say the 19th (40 weeks)... we're hoping for 12/21/12 (21/12/12) , because it would be awfully cool to be born on the day the world ends.

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them.  this is our first.

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do?  i teach English to "adult" art and film students. (and, yes, the quotation marks are intentional.)

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working?  we're both huge travelers and usually spend at least a month every year exploring another country.  i really love drawing, painting, doing collage, taking pictures....pretty much anything creative.   i'm also a voracious reader and a crossword puzzle addict.

Who is in your family? Me (36), DP Jack (36), DD Ocean (4)

What pronouns do you and your family members use? she/he/she

If you're pregnant, when are you due? May 2, 2013, though since I'm having twins, I'm aiming for sometime in April!

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them. Ocean is, in spite of our best efforts, completely obsessed with princesses (seriously folks, that kid did not have a single "girl" thing for the first three years of her life- I don't know how this happened!). She is also a budding musician, and likes to make up songs while strumming on her guitar.

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do? I direct an LGBT center on a university campus, and also teach queer studies classes. It is pretty much my dream job. My DP is a professor at the same institution. When Ocean was little, she used to pretend to type on the computer keyboard and tell us that she was working on her dissertation. She has clearly been scarred by having academic parents!

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working/doing the grunt work of parenting? Not surprisingly, I love going to the beach and swimming in the ocean. Sadly, over the past two years we've moved further and further inland. I've gone from living on a island in the Atlantic to being 6 hours from the beach. I hope to reverse this trend at some point! I also love reading novels, hiking/walking (though I've found this is challenging with a child who is too big to be carried, but gets tired way sooner than I do), and sitting around laughing with a group of friends.

Fun! Thanks for the new thread, knitting! Also, Sara, I can’t believe it’s been a whole year already! Happy birthday, Shay! Are you guys celebrating in any particular way?

Name/Username?
Isa

Who is in your family?
Me (Emily), DP Stephanie, baby Edith.

What pronouns do you and your family members use?
We’re all she until/unless we hear otherwise from the munchkin.

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them.
Edie thinks it’s hilarious when we mirror her movements or enjoy eating our food. She also pukes whenever we give her anything other than milk to eat. –sigh-

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do?
I’m a public librarian—mostly I plan programs, but a couple times a week they let me go and do actual reference stuff, too.

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working/doing the grunt work of parenting?
I like cooking and sewing and travelling and thrift stores. Probably too much, on all of those.

She's here!
And so are the boys!

Pokey, Thanks!

Isa, we have had a couple of small parties, all the cake pictures are on real cameras, so I haven't uploaded them yet.  I'm hoping to walk down to where he was born while it's still daylight.

Tandy, we take the boys to movies all the time.  They're only $4 here and the babies are free. We just go around bedtime and they nurse and sleep.  It's kind of awesome. We frequently see other babies there, too. I think they've both stayed happily awake for at least one move, too. Congratulations and welcome!

Name/Username? I'm starling on here.

Who is in your family? Me (37), DP (41), DD (3.75) and DS (1)

What pronouns do you and your family members use? She/whatever/she/he

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them. DD is whip-smart and super funny, and has a vocabulary to rival most adults. DS is a content, mellow and always joyful kid.  He loves things with moving parts and bits to climb, whereas DD is a thinker and dreamer.

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do? Outside the home I'm a paramedic two days a week.  Inside the home, I'm a writer.

If you stay home with your kids, what do your days tend to look like? I stay home five days a week.  We do a lot of activities with fellow homeschooling families, as well as hang out around home doing crafty things and reading stories and cooking together.

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working/doing the grunt work of parenting? Reading, traveling, camping.  Having a shower BY MYSELF.

Ooh fun! Thanks Knitting! and HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHAY!

Name/Username? Onemommyonemama

Who is in your family? Me (29), DP (36), DD1/Zo (3.5), DD2/ Sage (7 months)

What pronouns do you and your family members use? all she right now.

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them.

Zo tells stories out loud much of the day that have (in my opinion) pretty solid characters and story line, but too many references to poop. She likes playing alone outdoors creating intricate rock sculptures - one of which she has now spent 5 months, and a total of who knows how many hours on.

Sage communicates with us until we get it. She taught us how to EC when she was a newborn. She learns signs with haste. She can't crawl but she almost swims across the floor using her arm strength and sliding her body. She seems like she is hungry for tools to talk and move and get on with it already... but with all that growin is peaceful and content.

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do? I work for a non-profit program where young adults live overseas for months/a year in a community affected by economic poverty. I train and debreif participants, support them while they are away, do office work, etc. My wife is a high school math teacher.

If you stay home with your kids, what do your days tend to look like? Right now my wife and I are both at home. She took the leave, and I work from home part time. Next month she will be teaching part time - so our days tend to look like:

am - DP with children, they generally play outside or go to the library/ I work in the office upstairs.

afternoon - DP goes to work, I hang out with Z and S, they both nap for an hour or so, then we create food or art until DP gets home.

Some mornings I skip work and we do something together.

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working/doing the grunt work of parenting?

I love food and cooking - and all things involved. I garden, I like to make my own pasta, I can and dehydrate. I like making bread.

I love being outdoors preferably somewhere beautiful. I bike/hike/ski/snowboard.

I love creating - mostly right now I have a bit of time to sew, I create art and promotional materials for my work and a few non-profits, I create with food. If I had more time and space I love painting, drawing and sculpture.

I love social justice movements and communities.

I like hardware stores, fixing things, finding a great deal on something we need, and I have my dad's love of buying new tools even though I don't have a project to use them on... yet.

Happy Birthday Shay!  And, congrat's momses on surviving his first year (especially the bits of it that involve two infants!)!!!!

I'll fill out the questions later...we have had a day at our house.  DS  just was evaluated for speech and he's going to need some pretty intensive speech therapy (the kind of speech therapy that makes me wonder if I need to get him an ID with his name on it because saying his own name may not happen for a while...what he refers to himself as does not resemble his name AT ALL)  I'm kind of freaking out.  It's an articulation disorder--and basically he is going to be learning to speak English the way I would have to learn to speak Hebrew--beginning with the individual sounds of each and every letter.  No cognitive, behavioral (other than ya know, being 2.5) or receptive language issues at all--JUST expressive.  Sigh.  I think I'm going to sign up for the donor sibling registry run by our sperm bank to see if anyone else who used our donor is having speech issues...

Wishin' that's pretty intense. I hope it is not as hard of a road as it looks like from here.

I don't expect you to tell us his name, but it makes me curious. Ari couldn't pronounce her name until she was almost 6 and Osha called her "baby" for her first couple of years because he couldn't pronounce her name.

Happy Birthday, Shay!!!

Wishin', I'm sorry your son is having difficulties.  I'm sure with involved, caring, loving parents he will do fine.  If you need anything, we're all here to help!

Name/Username?  DesertSunsets

Who is in your family?  me (Ashleigh) 26, DW (Teri) 26, and DD (Everleigh) 9 weeks

What pronouns do you and your family members use? Everyone's a she, for right now at least!

If you already have kids, tell us two interesting things about each of them.  Ever is a doppelganger for my DW when she was a baby (which thrills me to no end), and has quite the love affair with fans and the birch trees on her bedroom wall.

If you work outside the home (or inside the home at something other than parenting), what do you do?  I'm a histotechnologist in a dermatopathology lab... which is a couple of big words that mean I process skin samples sent from dermatologists.  DW is a technical director at a performing arts theatre for the University of Arizona.

What are your favorite things to do when you're not working/doing the grunt work of parenting?  I love reading, painting, working in ceramics, dabbling in stained glass, and writing.  Not necessarily in that order!

Also, thanks Tigers for the brand new thread!  I noticed on the first page though that my username is listed incorrectly, could you fix it to say DesertSunsets? Thank you!

Mom and Mama to our Ever so clever daughter (9.1.12)! We have a blog, too!

Thanks folks, he WILL be fine.  It's just seeming like such a huge task to get him there at the moment :)  I first brought up some concerns at his 12 month appt...and everyone kept saying that he'd be fine.  He does say lots of stuff...it's just really hard to understand him.  And, now that I know what's going on with his speech I'm seeing things that I thought were just normal things--he says "no" with an inquisitive tone when you ask him questions, which is actually his work around to avoid having to say words he just can't say; and with words like water he says "wa wa" not because he's little and adorable, but because he can't say the word properly.  He uses TONS of sound effects (some of which are wildly impressive) combined with gesture and the words he uses (usually understandable in context) to communicate with us.  But as his circle gets bigger it's harder b/c other folk don't understand most of it.

Mostly that he didn't seem to use as many different sounds as other babies and didn't seem to imitate us as much as other babies his age.  Part of what is great, and part of the reason early intervention didn't catch it (he was screened at 2 and passed the screening) is that he's really smart and has no receptive or cognitive difficulties.  It's really a muscle/brain communication thing apparently--so he's going to have to be trained to use those muscles that his brain is having a hard time coordinating.

Wishin, wow. I'm glad you got it figured out when you did.

Not to make light of the situation, but have you read Gerald McBoingBoing?

How is everyone else? Does anyone have great Thanksgiving plans?

Kate and Nos, you're next! How are you feeling?
