Second Parent Adoption vs Guardianship

Can someone explain the diff to me?

My 10 yr old has no second parent on her birth certificate and my DP wants to be in her life. I am mostly just wanting coverage in case something happens to me, because I don't have any family in my area and I don't want DD thrown into foster care temporarily until my family could come up.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Partnered mama with DD (01/04) and DD (08/09) and 8 critters, including a !

Hmm... I only know of cases where a guardianship was sent up with foster children. I don't know how it would work with your partner. My first thought is that it would be revocable unlike an adoption. It does seem like it would be a good idea to have something set up to allow your partner to make decisions for your daughter just in case. If you are not married and your partner does not want to be responsible for DD until adulthood then guardianship would be better. If DP adopts then I would imagine if you broke up, you would be able to sue for child support and things like that. It may also affect financial aid for college, etc.

Here is some more info.

Married to a wonderful woman since 2010. Baby boy C arrived in June 2013!
