I'm interested in starting this hobby... while I've found a wealth of information and tips online, I thought it'd be nice to talk to some seasoned pros.

Check out www.soapdishforum.com - I've been in business for 9 years and I still learn things there!

Why not try the natural home and body care section of MDC? They talk a lot about soap there. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find something of interest.

Susan ****** Cavtich has written what I consider to be the definitive books on soapmaking. The first is called Natural Soapmaking and the second is the Soapmakers Companion. The first book produces large batches and the second produces smaller batches and also has lots of other things like lip balms and so forth.

I've been making soap for more than 30 years and if I had written a book, it would be just like these. Detailed explanations, descriptions of oils, the whole process are included. Note: for molds, you can use half gallon or quart milk cartons; make sure they are clean. They are great to start because they are 'free', they are waxed and can be easily peeled away and recycled. The half gallon holds 4 lbs of soap and the quart holds 2 lbs.
