Hi Jane, I am mama to a delightful little girl. She was born witha club foot and we are in the process of the Ponsetti Method to correct it. In the beginning she was casted and I struggled, but found ways to make get her comfortable in carriers and slings.
We used the Ergo with the infant insert and a ring sling. Then she moved into a brace that is two shoes connected by a bar (sort of like a snow board) that is the width of her shoulders. It challenged the carriers even more. Her legs are unable to spread apart very far. I loved my Ergo, but it was shipped off to my sister since I couldn't use it anymore.
I mastered the Moby by threading it through the brace. She would sleep for hours on my chest tucked into all the fabric. I loved it! The Moby wrap was so cozy! The downside was that is is really tough to get on and off. Especially with the her brace. I found similar comfort in a Baby Hawk mei tei carrier and felt it was somewhat easier to get in and out of. The back carry with these is really challenging. I keep working on it though.
I ended up using the Baby Bjorn more than anything. It's ease was so great for us. As well as the thin crotch saddle. I could snap in the bottom pieces and tread the carrier through her legs and secure her in. It was the least comfortable for my back and probably her crotch but it worked so we used it. She is too big for it now.
I can do the hip carry with a ring sling. It is really comfortable and great for times when she is awake and I want her close to me. It is really stimulating for her.
I would really like to find a way to carry her on my back as she is now too big to be worn on the front. I am a single mama and wearing my babe is essential! She doesn't nap well without me. I can't just lay with her all the time. She is a great sleeper as long as she has me. So having a back carry that worked for us with a hood so she could sleep would be a god send!
Any Ideas? Suggestions?
Hi Mama, what about using a mei tai? It would be supportive enough for a back carry, but you could scrunch the base to fit it as needed with her leg brace. I would probably go with a tall-bodied mei tai like the Kozy to give her upper body support. You can always use a hair scrunchy or bandana to snug up the base if necessary.
