Have you ever offered advice to a stranger on slinging?

I'm just wondering. I've often seen moms slinging their babes with the rings way too low or else with the rings on their back or some other uncomfortable looking combination. I have the impulse to go up to them and first off congratulate them for slinging their babe and then suggesting that they might want to move the rings etc into a more comfortable position. But I hold back since I'm not sure how it would be taken YK? Have y'all ever done this and what was the response from the mama?

I saw a lady at Super Target today wearing a Nojo. She was about 5'2" and petite. The sling was so bulky and ugggly (IMHO). The back was all twisted up. It took every amount of strength in my soul not to go up to her. I am just shy. QUOTE]

If someone walked up to me and adjusted my pouch or sling saying "here, I think this will be more comfortable for you." I'd HUG them!!!

Everybody here knows you can go to your local LLL mtg any old time and get great hands on help, right?

My SIL, on her 4th child, but still learning (from me, hehe!) bought a sling finally. At a fam reunion her ds was only a couple weeks old. I saw her dh carrying him across the yard hanging and swinging below the waist. It was a travesty. Later, I got a hold of the boy and the sling and held him kangaroo style tummy to tummy and he took a 2 1/2 hr nap on my chest. The best sleep he'd had in his life. My SIL kept checking him, thinking something was wrong. Nope, something was right.

~~epilogue, she nursed him for over 4 yrs. The longest she'd nursed before was 15 mos.

Know what? I think THAT right there is the kick in the pants I needed so badly to get myself to another LLL meeting - the one I go to people show up, have the meeting and leave. I've asked the leader for sling help, before I found my local AP group, and got nothing.

Oh, yes, I've offered advice to strangers on slinging... more times than I can count (if you count raving (and explaining why/how it works) about whichever carrier is my carrier of choice on whatever particular day when people ask me, "doesn't your back hurt?").

To be honest, I even lent my Ergo to a total stranger (well... a total stranger but she was working at the kids book store that DD and I go to often, and where DD *loves* the regular saleslady, when the regular lady was on vacation. Turns out she's the wife of the owner, but I didn't know that at the time), and then the day I got the Ergo back (drop off and pick up at the bookstore), I lent it to another total stranger in the bookstore (who turns out to be a friend of the first stranger, but I found that out after I'd lent it to her) who was asking about my Kozy because her BBjorn was hurting her back.

And, I lent my Kozy to a colleague at work for a weekend trip she went on without her DH but with her toddler...

And, I bought my MIL a solerveil ring sling and showed her the hip hold (DD and my nephew are both toddlers)....

I'm turning into a regular "sling lending library"... LOL

A babywearing class would be AWESOME! I had to teach myself when I started slinging dd at 6 months, and when I think about the terrible way I had the sling then....OW!

Now people give me odd looks because dd (now 2) sleeps in the sling (my old handmade maya type standby) so I have these cute little legs sticking out the side, and all these mainstream ladies asking how old dd is (then getting shocked when I tell them) and then the next question "Doesn't that hurt?" or "Isn't she a bit old to carry?" UM No, I am thoroughly convinced I am not going to be slinging her through kindgerarten.

Congratulations on your leadership!! That is going to be such a service to other mommas.

I've been babywearing since my first son who is now 5. I still occasionally need help. Like I just switched to a mesh and today a mom helped me figure out why I kept slipping. Just talking about it with another mom helped. It would be really hard for someone new to babywearing to figurine it out solo.

T Tupelo Honey, congratulations! we are not supposed to announce we are Leaders, or use LLL in our names, on non-LLL boards, but WTH, I am not the LLL police.

OK, I am not a Leader, I am a lay lactation specialist for a major international bfing support organization.

I do not speak for LLL when I offer bfing or NFL/AP information and support on this board. I speak for myself and for our children.

Hey I just noticed this thread is still happening. I've since been asked several times about various slings I've been wearing over the past couple of weeks. The Kozy gets lots of attention, particularly at our local farmer's market. I had a great conversation about it with a mama who had her 3 week old in an OTSBH. Told her where to get it, told her about the maya. I'm now learning to use a girasol so hopefully I'll be able to share info on that also. And our OTSBH still gets regular use. Btw our LLL group has lots of slinging mamas. Not that I've been in awhile.

I don't wear my sling right, 95% of the time my son is standing in it. And half the time I fail to notice it's slid up off my shoulder against my neck. I couldn't get the hang of it at all until he was about 4 months old and then I had to wear it with the rings on the back because there just wasn't room for him in it with the rings in the front. I'm 5'4" tall 120 pounds, I don't know if that would make a difference as to how it would fit, but it was like there just wasn't room for the rings and him in the front. I figure as long as I'm comfortable and he's comfortable what difference does it make if it's right or wrong, yk? All I'm really saying is please don't assume just because someone is wearing theirs wrong that it's an accident.
