A radio host in South Carolina says that nursing mothers should breastfeed their babies in the car or on the commode. She also says nursing mothers can feed their baby while driving to an eating establishment (though she recants this statement later). Then she proposes that there should be a public indecency law for nursing in public, when the SC law states exactly the opposite.

Listen here (about 6 minutes into the show and discussed for about 25 minutes) if you want to hear something infuriating:

http://newsradioword.everyzing.com/m...he-morning.htm

Also, Lisa Rollins gives her e-mail address several times during the program. You can e-mail her at lrollins [at] entercom [dot] com

Wha?

Yes, I've breastfed on the toilet but out of necessity not choice

Feeding your baby and driving sounds like a recipe for disaster

Here's the e-mail I sent. I was tempted to send her some pictures of me nursing DD, but that might have been taking things a bit too far.

Dear Lisa,

You may think breastfeeding in public is in poor taste, but I think your comments are in poor taste for several reasons.

1. You state that breastfeeding in public is indecent and should be regulate. Thankfully South Carolina law PROTECTS the nursing mother and her baby's right to breastfeed anywhere. The exact law states:

S.C. Code Ann. § 63-5-40 (2005) provides that a woman may breastfeed her child in any location where the mother is authorized to be and that the act of breastfeeding is not considered indecent exposure. (2008 HB 4747)

2. You state that you chose not to breastfeed, and that is clear by your suggestions for breastfeeding mothers to feed in the car or in the bathroom. Would you eat in the bathroom, or in the car while your friends were eating inside? Why should this woman be expected to do this. Breastfeeding babies need to eat more than bottle-feeding babies. This is due to the unique composition of human milk. Most breastfeeding babies do not follow a specific schedule, and doctors recommend that breastfed babies be fed on demand, rather than on a schedule. Many breastfed babies (such as my own) refuse to drink any milk from a bottle, and many women have difficulty pumping. Letting the baby breastfeed wherever and whenever needed simply makes more sense.

3. You admit that this woman was not overly exposing herself or trying to draw attention to herself. You probably saw more skin from ladies walking around in summer sundresses and more breast on billboards on your way to Chikfila. The mother breastfeeding is doing something appropriate with her breasts, as opposed to the ladies on the billboards or the ladies wearing immodest summer attire. Why is there so much discrimination against the breastfeeding woman rather than the others.

I will continue to nurse my children in public (an 18 month old and a baby on the way in September), and I have nursed and will keep nursing in church and in restaurants. If it bothers you, mind your own business and eat your chicken sandwich and waffle fries.

Oh my gosh!! "nursing mothers and the Le leche league might disagree with me..."

you think?!

nursing on the toilette sounds so hygienic.

I love the guy on the show though.

I guess I'm a Mom... how strange and wonderful.

How inappropriate and so RUDE of me to take up a bathroom stall for 20 min to feed my baby. I just couldn't do that to someone who had to go.

Totally! If there's a line I'll even tuck and do my belt outside of the stall so that I don't take up an extra 10 seconds.

I can't even believe this woman. About 6 minutes in she starts spewing her ignorance. Be forewarned though that its infuriating to hear her.

She goes as far as to say "Why didn't this woman breastfeed her baby on the way here in the car?" lol or my personal favorite, be decent and just don't leave the house if you're a nursing mother

I'm surprised this hasn't made its way here yet!

There was a thread about this already and so I've merged the two.

Please take a few moments to review the Lactivism forum guidelines. As disturbing as this is, the purpose of this forum is breastfeeding advocacy, not namecalling or character assassination, no matter how deserved. Please feel free to PM me with any questions or concerns.

I honestly don't know how I missed a thread on this. I swear I tried looking because I thought for SURE there'd be one already.

Sorry about that!

The other day DD needed a diaper change at the mall. I took her to the changing station in the bathroom.

Let me tell you... that bathroom was so nasty that I was kind of disgusted to even change her diaper in there.

Then I thought about all the people suggesting we nurse our babies in bathrooms. I'm not sure I had completely appreciated how DISGUSTING that is until that moment.

Even the "mother's room" at my local BRU smelled like the dirty diaper trash had been rotting in there for months.

Ugh.

Blogged about this and shared a link to the show's transcript so that we can continue to spread the work about this without driving traffic up on their site listening to the show (as that is why they are so offensive, to make people mad and get them talking all to drive traffic to their site and thus the advertisers).

Here is my post and my letter to Lisa: http://ht.ly/29taZ

If I lived in SC, I'd print off a whole bunch of the bf law, grab my closest nursing friends and have a nurse-in in front of that radio station and at that same Chikfila (my first job in high school btw!). Chikfila, if I remember right, is a Christian company and that could also be touted should they get any hassle at the actual restaurant. It sounds like they didn't but my friend was recently hassled at the good ol' YMCA, in which I know that C stands for Christian. Nurse on sisters of South Carolina!

There will be a nurse-in at the station on August 2nd. There will also be more nurse-ins at affiliate stations around the country. Here is more information:

Hey, I should have thought to post this to this discussion sooner. Anyway, I live in Greenville, SC, the location of the radio show station where the comments were made.

I went to the Greenville, SC Nurse In, took photos and wrote some web articles about it. It was great to meet Elizabeth, the organizer of the event and the other moms who attended the Greenville Nurse In. The 3rd article contains a slide show that you can click through to see about 13 photos of the Nurse In.

I wanted to give the event lots of web exposure so I wrote/posted 6 articles last week, all related to the issue.

Here are links to the articles:

The first 2 articles are before the nurse in -- explaining the comments and announcing the nurse in and the others were written about what happened at the Greenville Nurse In and the organizer of the event.

Moms outraged: Negative breastfeeding comments from Russ and Lisa Radio Show

Nurse In peaceful protest scheduled for August 2 at Greenville area radio station WORD 106.3

Nurse In event: Greenville, SC moms nurse babies outside radio station in protest

Elizabeth Hitchcock: Organizer of Nurse In, peaceful protest in Greenville, SC and other US cities

Upstate moms support public breastfeeding at peaceful protest

And this article is actually a vote/poll about public breastfeeding:

Public breastfeeding poll: Does it offend you to see a woman nursing in public?
