We are holding a nurse in on January 2nd, and here is why.
A friend of mine met me and my 3.5 year old at the pool with her 3 year old and 5 month old. I had the two three year old with me using the facility, and she sat on the bleachers, pool side, to nurse her daughter.
A life guard approached, and asked her to go into the locker room to nurse, 'in case it might make someone uncomfortable'.
She refused, siting the need to watch her son. He asked her to cover up (more, since she was already using a blanket). She again refused.
This facility was packed, btw, with people of all sizes, and wearing all kinds of revealing swimwear. I myself had FAR more cleavage in my one piece than my friend ever showed with her nursing, but this guy never asked ME to cover up.
When she approached the pool supervisor, and told him what happened, and 'reminded' him that it was against the law to ask a woman to remove herself, or cover up, he said : that the life guard just didn't know what was happening, and that she was right, technically it was against the law, but they could get around the law by restricting food and drink pool side.
I was deeply unsatisfied with this answer, and felt like he was showing a great deal of contempt for her concern, and was dismissive or the state law, as if it wasn't something he really needed to pay attention to, since he had a 'way around it.
I am sorry to say my friend went home very upset. She said she was shaking while she was driving home, and she may never set foot in the pool again, despite it being a wonderful facility.
I am calling for this nurse in, because this supervisor, and the staff of the largest indoor pool complex in the state of washington, which has a designated toddler area, and seems family friendly in every other way, needs an education on how very serious mamas, babies, and their breast feeding need to be taken.
Please pass this information on to anyone you know in the great seattle, tacoma, federal way Washington area,
children that use the pool need to be supervised by an adult, and there is a fee to use the facility,
and thank you!
