I hope I didnt just mess up.....I took Robitussin because I have a really bad cough. If I remember correctly, my doctor told me I could take it while pregnant, so that means I can take it while nursing, right? It was just one dose. Is this okay?

Kinda crunchy mama to my 3 DD's (ages 7, 4, and 6 weeks)

I'm 95% sure that's ok. I can't remember what the active ingredient is, but you might want to look it up at this site :

If the data you need isn't there, try :

I found it on kellymom and you're ok! Here's a copy and paste of the info :

Name of medication AAP approved?* Lactation Risk Category**
Codeine yes L3 (moderately safe)
Dextromethorphan not reviewed L1 (safest)
Guaifenesin not reviewed L2 (safer)

Robitussin is either the 2nd or 3rd medicine listed here, can't remember which. I think the 2nd. Anyway, it's fine.

I went to the doctor recently for a cold and was told that Robitussin is OK for nursing (I specifically asked).

Mom "D" to DD1 "Z" (14) and DD2 "I" (11) DH "M"

Robitussin is Dextromethorphan and sometimes has Guaifenesin too. I was told they were both safe to take while pregnant and/or bfing. HTH

I think it's the other way around, it is guiafenesin but sometimes contains dextromethorphan. Guiafenesin is just an expectorant - it thins your mucous so you can cough it up easier. It is definitely safe while pregnant and shouldn't give you any problems while nursing.

I don't know as much about dextromethorphan though. What kind of Robitussin did you take?

The plain robitussin has both in it. The extra strength DM just has dextromorphan (sp?). Anyway, I took it while pg and bfing. I was told it was okay by 2 different drs. I usually wouldn't take it every 6 hours (or whatever they say). I would only take it right before bed and maybe once in the middle of the night so I could sleep. I would just suck it up during the day.
