I need help!
I was diagnosed with yeast infection (vaginal yeast) and I do not know what to do with it because I’m breastfeeding my baby and it looks like most of 1 day creams that do help are either not recommended for breastfeeding mothers or have no studies on this issue.
I have tried douching with grapefruit seed extract (approximately 5 drops per 4 oz of water). Didn’t do it. I have tried gentian violet. That was a real disaster for me. I am all purple, got a lot of extra discomfort, burning and even pain, but it didn’t seem to bother the yeast in any way .
Before I got pregnant I had the same thing and none of the over the counted creams helped. The only thing that did was 1 day prescription cream called Gynazole – 1. However it seems that there are no studies this way or another if it goes into breast milk or not.
I’m being miserable. If somebody had similar experience and knows what may help please share.
Like mhenry writes, Diflucan is definitely safe for breastfeeding. The official category for Diflucan is a Class C. Class A is safe, Class B is pretty safe, Class C is not optimum, but not dangerous, and Class X is contraindicated. That said, Diflucan is a Class C because the companies haven't done enough research to feel comfortable being responsible, monetarily, for any lawsuits that are possible.
I was in to my non-crunchy, knows-NOTHING-about-breastfeeding family practioner last week about the yeast infection I have and can't get rid of on my own. I came in, having already researched my options, and told him what was going on. He was hesitant to prescribe the Diflucan, but did. I came home, did even more research and am completely comfortable taking it while breastfeeding.
Let's see....some facts to help you feel more at ease.
IBCLC, LLL and other lactation folks all recommend Diflucan to nursing moms.
Hospitals give Diflucan directly to preemies for yeast/fungal problems.
www.kellymom.com which is considered a very reliable source of information approves the use of Diflucan.
For my own, persistent infection, I was prescribed one Diflucan pill per week for three weeks, plus 7 nights of vaginally inserted terconazole cream. I am nursing my 12 month old, some days it's exclusive breastfeeding, some days he eats about 50%.
I hope this helps and I hope that you are all better soon.

Here are the specific kellymom cites:
Dr. Hale (Medications & Mothers' Milk), a pharmacologist who exclusively studies the transfer and effect of drugs in breastmilk, also lists clotrimazole (the generic name for Gyne-Lotrimin & some other brands) as an L1 for vaginal application, and miconazole (Monistat) is an L2. Terconazole (Terazol) is an L3.
Butoconazole (Gynezole) isn't listed in my copy of Hale (2003) but perhaps this will set your mind at ease -- medical researchers who indicate that all topical antifungals are OK while breastfeeding simply due to the extremely low rate of transfer into milk:
Grrr. It makes me so mad when nursing moms are told (often by medical caregivers) that they have to choose between breastfeeding and treating their own medical problems.
HTH, and feel better soon!
You gave me so great and helpful advices! And so quick!
I did take a tablet of Diflucan (150 mg) yesterday and am going to take two more as my doctor thought that it’s a good idea to take it 3 days in a row.
I’m still feeling a lot of burning and etching, but it will probably go away pretty soon (at least I hope so).
I've been having recurring yeast infections throughout my pregnancy and afterwards too. I couldn't use any medications, so what I did was take a bulb of garlic, thread it with a needle ( I always doubled up on the thread) and insert it before you go to bed. This has worked for me each time. Just make sure that there is enough thread to pull it out in the morning. This is a great alternative remedy for women who can't use medications.
