This is terrible, truly, but it sounds like a case of someone with their head up their *ss who interjected their personal views in place of actual knowledge/authority. I mean, their own website lists their position as in direct opposition to what she told you.

As far as I'm concerned, he/she's as good as fired.

In other words, this is the work of a fool with a superiority complex and/or complete lack of common sense (not to mention desire to keep their job!).

I'm so very sorry you're going through this. You have all of our support, and my admiration for your strength and perseverance!

Did you happen to get the name of the person with whom you spoke? I would call back and ask for a supervisor, and ask that this person be educated about their response to breastfeeding issues (or else they might end up hadling a claim against themselves).

I did get her name. I will definitely be following up. I am focusing on filing the complaint, then will send them a letter in regard to my experience, and follow-up from there.

On a side note, I spoke with a journalist today who was very interested in both the original Y episode and my experience with the Human Rights Committee. We'll see what happens.

I cried when I got off the phone. So frustrating.

Um, we have a HUGE problem here when the staff assessing whether I have a claim or not are ignorant of the law. She told me that because they offered me a room to go to ("over there - the child care centre") there was no problem! That is clearly not the case

From their own webpage:

What About Breastfeeding?

You have rights as a nursing mother. For example, you have the right to breastfeed a child in a public area. No one should prevent you from nursing your child simply because you are in a public area. They should not ask you to "cover up", disturb you, or ask you to move to another area that is more "discreet".

Great. Now the Human Rights Commission is broken, too. I guess I really do need that lawyer.
OH MY GOD.

If it weren't your business, I'd have a half a mind to call them up and them out! But I won't, because I don't want to make you look bad. But I can still wish I could... hahaha

subbing to keep up with updates...I'm Canadian and nurse my toddler at the Y, never occurred to me that I may have a "run-in" there.

So sad and horrified that this is happening - I can't believe it!

i can't believe the human rights woman's response! that's crazy. i rused to support people who were filling claims based on sexual orientation and I never ran into anything like that - that woman should be fired (or at least given more training on how be to a little more...sensitve?!?!)

Something along the lines of: as per my telecon with So and So on Such and Such a Date you advise me that blah blah blah; this would seem to run counter to the information on your own web site which states: blah blah blah.

A failure to reply effectively amounts to an admission by silence (as long as you can prove the letter was sent and presumably received).

As they say in my business if it's not in writing it didn't happen.

Once you have their position on record you can take it from there. Unless you want to be doing the "we didn't say that ... oh yes you did" dance a couple of weeks from now.

Good luck.

how much difference does it make if its a private facility? From what I understand the Y can refuse you if you don't vaccinate your child and they are allowed to do that because its private.
Private facilities are not above the law.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I always understood that the Y was publicly funded...we had one in our city close because of lack of funding.

Regardless, I don't care if you need a secret handshake to get in, she was authorized to be there and they had no right to interfere with her breastfeeding. Especially with Ontario's laws on women going topless, which I have to say just makes good sense (nipples are nipples after all )

Waiting patiently for updates!

Stating the obvious here...

Alden is such a little cutie!! And look at those cheeks! Good job on the milk production, what a roly-poly little monkey!

Sorry, I was overcome by the cuteness.

I'm eager to hear what will happen next, I really hope the OHRC really gets the point across and does some internal work too

Keep up the good work mama!

Great article, short, sweet and to the point!

This is the big article. There should be one in print hitting the stands this morning! The Toronto Star is a big, big newspaper (largest circulation in Canada):
