You rock! And I'm so happy to keep seeing positive updates as you follow through on this case.

The Toronto Star article that you linked to in an earlier blog entry is GREAT! Look at this paragraph, everyone:

"So why, amid news of poverty, war and elections, is breastfeeding such an explosive issue that people can't wait to weigh in on? Probably because it touches on everything from women's rights to our sexualized culture to the mixed messages constantly dished out to modern moms."

It is so rare to see such complex media treatment of lactivism. This is a paper -- or at least a reporter -- who GETS IT, kwim?

Here is another story that ran locally on CTV Toronto about the Breastfeeding Challenge. The story that accompanies the link is about the Breastfeeding Challenge but if you click on the link to the right "CTV Toronto: Metet Nabres with the feeding frenzy 2:26" there is the story that ran on the news and at the very end Alden and I are mentioned again.

Asked to appear on The Pregnancy Show

Alden and I have asked to be on The Pregnancy Show this month to tell our story and midwifery. I will keep the blog updated with date and time so you can tune in if you get the show.

Breastfed at the Y!

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:32 pm by mothernurture

Well, at least there has been some immediate effect from what happened to me in September. This past weekend I was at the Y, watching my kids swim, and Alden got hungry. So I fed him (imagine that!) This time, no one said a thing. Yay! So no matter what else happens from here, there is this small victory.

This week I have to send back paperwork to the Ontario Human Rights Commission to indicate whether or not I want to go to mediation. The date they have given me is December 6th. It could be all settled before the new year, if all goes well.

Thank you for the continued support. I really appreciate it! Over 3300 people have viewed this blog and many have sent comments of support. Thank you, thank you!

Hugs. "Less teeth than my 7mo" -- gave me a wry chuckle.

Have faith. This process is a war of attrition. The big players are happy to let things drag on and on and on, in hopes that you will get tired or bored and move on and forget about justice. It doesn't help that the public has the attention span of a gnat. If you can bear it, just keep jumping through the hoops and wait 'em out.

What happens if the YMCA doesn't appear for the mediation in December? What's the next step?

Thanks!

The next step, if they don't meet for mediation, is that it goes to Investigation. Seeing as they publicly admitted the affair I can't believe that the investigation would find anything not in my favour. And I have a strong witness, another Y member, who interacted with them through the whole thing and has volunteered her support.

I think you are very right in your analysis of how things are going now. They got their apologetic soundbite (well, not really an apology but an admittance) and will now not play fair.

Well, the update is that there is no update. Rather, the YMCA has chosen not to respond to the claim.

Where does that leave me you might ask? It leaves me hanging. Apparently, they don’t have to respond. They don’t have to indicate whether they are attending the Mediation. They don’t have to do a darn thing. At some point, and of course no one can tell me when that might be, they will be contacted to be asked whether they are coming to the mediation or not, and I will be notified if they respond. So deadlines aren’t really deadlines, and requirements to respond are not really requirements. Man, this process has less teeth than my 7 month old!

So I have to make the plans to attend Mediation in December and wonder the whole time if they are coming, right up to the start time. They might not. And if they don’t come, then my file will be added to the huge pile to be investigated, sometime. Of course, as the one filing the complaint I have none of these luxuries, my deadlines are deadlines and the burden of this process relies on me.

My intake worker at the OHRC today sounded tired. I wonder if she is as demoralized as I am about this whole process.

And how do I feel about the YMCA? They suck even worse than before. They chose to not even dignify my complaint, or follow process.

Scroll down to a previous post for contact information to voice your complaint. Maybe that nurse-in would grab their attention?

Ugh. How typical of large organizations. Bleh.

I will send an email and am also ready to mobilize for a nurse-in if you want to go that way.

Are you wanting to do a national nurse-in, or just local at the one that harassed you?

I am happy with whatever people want to do, but wouldn't it be great if there were nurse-ins all over Canada and the US, and even worldwide?!?
