I was thinking about the little bits of information/stuff that I know that probably not many other people know : Things that you really dont need in your brain but it is there anyway that you find facinating or interesting but know will probably never come up in conversation. It can be about any topic at all. Mine happens to be about a animal

I thought it would be fun to share these little bits of info. with others.

I found out not long ago that female hyena's have what is known as a pseudo-penis and even has pseudo testicals (all this is caused by hormones) The female's clitoris is elongated to form a fully erectile phallus, and the vaginal opening is at the tip of this phallus. Only the shape of the glans at the tip of the phallus makes it possible to differentiate the sexes. The female urinates, mates and gives birth through it. Because of this mating is extremly difficult and the male has to know what he is doing.

Because of the length the young have to travel to be born, up to 7 inches, many of them smother because the placenta becomes detatched before the pup can reach the outside. Giving birth is also very dangerous to the mother since the opening on the pseudo penis is tiny and must tear badly for the pup to come out. She can easily bleed todeath or get infection.

You can get more information if you want to here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotted_Hyena

So what do you know that you want to share?

Wow, that's crazy!

Did you know that if you eat undercooked or raw red kidney beans it can make you SUPER sick with vomitting and diahhrea? There's a chemical in there that if it doesn't get broken down by higher cooking temps and times, then it makes you sick. So make sure you cook those beans!

Wife to dh and mommy to dd1 (3/07), ds (1/10), and dd2 (any day now)!

Did you know that (adult) humans:
1. Are virtually the only animal that can choke to death on our own food? (Other animals can suffocate if the airway is blocked, but they're unlikely to get it blocked with they swallow food.)
2. Can't swallow and breathe at the same time?

It happens because in humans, the larynx is low down in the throat. So, food has to go over the top of the larynx to get into the esophagus. In other animals (like apes), the larynx is so high that food goes around the side. Usually the epiglottis stops food from getting into the air passages, but if that slips up somehow, then we choke on our food!

Human babies, on the other hand, have a larynx that works more like an ape's -- food goes around the SIDE of the larynx. In addition, they don't have whatever reflex it is that prevents adults from breathing and swallowing at the same time. They can do both until 3-6 months.

But, if we didn't have our larynx where it is, we wouldn't be able to move our tongue sufficiently to make speech sounds. So, it's a trade off between choking and speaking in terms of throat-breathing-swallowing architecture.

I still remember the linking verbs from 6th grade English drills:

be

are

were

remain
seem

And, just for today, a special bonus with the demonstrative pronouns:

Not counting mosquito-borne illness, the hippopotamus is the deadliest animal in the world. Hippos kill more human each year than any other animal.

Think you hear the sounds of the ocean/waves when you put a seashell (conch) to you ear?

Nope. It is the sound of the ambient noise around you. The soundwaves that are normally around you are forced to 'bounce' off of the shell and into your ear as strenghthend soundwaves.

Eleanor of Aquitaine decided to join her husband (King of France) on the Crusades... and got her ladies-in-waiting and something like 300 vassals to go along - not because of any great religious fervor but because she was bored and looking for adventure. That crusade did badly, and the failure of it is attributed partly to the tons of luggage that Eleanor and her crew brought with them.

(And anyone who thought, "It's her royal highnesses matched luggage!" and "It's my industrial strength hair dryer, and I can't live without it!" gets a star. )

After managing to get her marriage to Louis annulled, she married King Henry of England.

Most girls didn't even marry one king.

And I can tell you why!

There was actually a case of food born illness on a commercial airline, where both the pilot and co-pilot (and half the passengers) were incapacitated.

The "cold" setting on your washing machine does not actually indicate cold water, it indicates what you would consider warm water, "warm" is actually hot, and "hot" is basically scalding. This is why you'll see some washers with two cold settings, "cold" and "tap cold".

Here are a few I always pull out during awkward silences at parties:

Did you know that a zebra has more fat under it's black stripes than it's white stripes?

My mother told me that Shirley Temple used to always have 52 curles, but once when I mentioned that I was corrected and was told that she actually had 32 for each of her movies.
BUT, I just looked it up on imdb.com and the true number (according to them) is 56.

House Cats have the largest eyes, in relation to the size of their heads.

Hydrogen Peroxide works really well at getting out stubborn stains --but check it first because sometimes it can also remove some of the color from the garment. I've only had that happen once though.

I'm sure that I've got many more, but these are the ones I'll subject you with right now.

I didn't know that. One of dd's friends broke her femur in a car accident over the summer. I knew it was major but wow!

My trivia: the US military only has 5 star generals in times of war so that they can become commander of NATO forces. There have been 5 5-star generals.
