So sorry to hear that. I do almost all my running/training on mine. I've been through THREE.

RR: Fighting scratchy throat and stuffiness which I think is trying to decide whether to be a cold or not. want to run, we'll see after dropping kids at school (in the freezing rain )

tjsmama~sorry to hear of your post (at 3:24am). You have been amazing through this ordeal.

I have a friend who has been married 11-12 years and dh told her a year and a half ago that he didn't love her anymore and hasn't for a while. He moved out and she has been trying to be patient while he decided what to do. He just filed for divorce this weekend. They have three kids, 4-10. I can't imagine how hard this would be.

Gaye I hope things work out for the best for you, you are amazing.

Ugh, Jess we had the same sort of morning. Dd3 was up at 4:30 and dh and I never got back to sleep. The older two were complete bickering grumps. They just left for school and I'm already exhausted. And this afternoon we get to start back with the wonderful homework again.

Thanks Jo! I did get new shoes after a gait analysis and all that but to no avail. After dd2 was born I still couldn't run on her first birthday. It felt like all my ligaments were still loose enough to give birth resulting in feeling like my leg was going to detatch at my hip. Does breastfeeding contribute to this? I should know the answer as I have bascially been breastfeeding somebody or two somebodies since 1996. I think I will try to figure out who to call today.

ETA I hope all the horrid mornings find some sunshine!

You don’t owe them an explanation, just a response.

Gaye - sending you strength to do what is best for you and your little guy.

Puppy - we've named him Seamus. He's such a good little fluffy guy, though we'll have to keep an eye on our slippers and star wars guys. we're all really enjoying having a pooch again.

RR (riding related L ) So my long ride couldn't happen on Sunday. The whole driving to Albany thing took about 8 hours total. I rescheduled for Monday, figuring that the warmer temps would make it easier. Unfortunately it just seemed to feel colder (humidity?) and I froze and only made it 1:40. But I did also manage an hour of yoga at home last night. There are photos of yesterday's ride on my blog. It was snowy and clear at the same time. Really pretty actually.

This morning I was on my way to the gym to ride 1:30 on the bike before work, when I realized that I'm involved in a webinar this morning at 9am and didn't have enough time. So I got to work extra early. It's no problem, I'll just go later this afternoon.

Supposed to fly down to the ATL tomorrow for meetings, but we're also supposed to get a storm tomorrow, so hopefully it will go well.

Oh - and i sent in my registration for SSWC09 so it's on. If you want to see the craziest race application ever, click that link. As a female, I've got my start place locked in which is nice. They've moved it to 9/16 instead of August, so i have even more time to get into kick ass shape.

Can I just say how much i love this training thing? I'm flying up hills on a singlespeed that we're giving me trouble in October on a geared bike. And my body looks good and my clothes fit great and best of all I feel good about myself.

I'll be up in Braselton at the Chateau Wed night through Saturday morning. Unfortunately I think it will be pretty jam packed. But if anyone wants to come up for a 7am 30 minute run - let me know!

gaye- Hope you're doing okay. Wishing you peace and strength. You seem to be so sincere in all you do esp. in working with H. Take care of yourself in this difficult time.

Sleepless mamas hang in there

grnmtnmama-What a great feeling. I try to visualize feeling that way about my body as way to motivate myself.

Hope to report some running later.

Jo ~ for an icky day yesterday but many : for 5 on the TM this morning! You rock!

mommabelle ~ Smoking TM!?! Eek! Hopefully it's fixable. You just need to slow down some.

What was up with the moon last night? Sleep here was wacky as well. I think within the first 30 minutes of me sleeping the cats woke me up twice, James came in asking questions, I had to pee like I had been sleeping all night.... I knew it was a bad start.

ash ~ Glad your first day of work went well.

HBM ~ How was your run with the church friend? How far did you go?

Gaye ~ I hope you can find exactly what you need to do for you and ds.

Not sure what the day has in store for me exercise-wise. Looking back, I have put in time for the last 4 days. Maybe I'll take the day off or maybe I'll go outside for a walk with DH and the doggy.

I dont know if many of you read the article describing the race GMM just registered for, but among other funny things about it is that the race location for this year was decided at last years race by a game of Ms. Packman (cant remember how the location finalists were decided), but the other funny thing is that if you win, you get a TATTOO. The motto is "dont win if you dont want the tatto". So look for a big Tat on GMM's ass (or somewhere) next Fall

GMM - great name; if dd2 had been a boy, we were thinking Seamus, and now my bro is due with a son this month and they are thinking Seamus (without me having mentioned it), and there was one more but now I dont remember Your training sounds amazing; the work-outs and the commitment! You so deserve all your results. We may very well come up to watch Im so impressed by you!

mommajb - how interesting. I have thought my joints feel much more loose this year than ever. It feels like what people describe about relaxin, although I never had the experience while preg.

HBM - at least I made it till 5! mama!

RR: just ran 4 with scratchy throat, hope I ran it out of me. Just stuck a Halls in my cheek and went for it.

: ds1's teacher sent me an email that she is calling me at 11:20am to talk to me about ISTEP. I'm as nervous as if it were my boss talking to me about my job, but.....it kinda is. please send good vibes. This is my son that struggles so much in his studies and has ADHD. He has pulled on his hair so much he has a huge bald spot. (we've given him something else to put that extra energy toward)

Okay, off to shower! hoping to get in some core work and push ups today.

mommajb~If you can skip the gp insurance-wise and go straight to an ortho, I probably would. Most gp's will tell you to rest for a period of time first before proceeding on testing that may tell you what's actually going on. While that approach does have its place, in my experience most sports injuries (that are not overuse injuries anyway) do NOT do this, or at the very least get better but then flare up again once you start activity up. In the meantime, you've lost that much time in conditioning and training if you're working toward something specific. Try to find a sports medicine specialist ortho (seems like a given, but not all are). If you need help finding a recommendation, you can call local PT clinics or your local college's athletic training department and ask who they use or who they would recommend. And yes, breastfeeding can cause loose joints, even up to a period of months after stopping. That doesn't mean that you need to stop to be able to run OR that there might not be something else going on.

Thanks for the good thoughts, ladies. I'm just so incredibly frustrated with this whole situation. We were supposed to have counseling on Friday but he had a trip come up for work, which he knew about last week but hasn't re-scheduled our appt. Last night I asked again if he had re-scheduled and he let me know that he didn't think we should because there's no point. I just don't get it. What was the point of moving back in for two months, getting DS used to having him around again, just to not make any effort and not even be willing to continue counseling?? I hate that I was starting to get comfortable again, although at least I'm grateful that I've managed to not start up feelings for him again for the most part. He hasn't actually said anything about moving out/divorce yet, but this all came up last night at bedtime, and I don't really see any other direction it could be going. I am incredibly angry, and hurt and concerned for DS who is now old enough to know a little more what's going on and ask questions. Which, of course, I'll be the one stuck answering. :

Oh well, life goes on. Must take DS to his music class this morning. Maybe I can get the whole trainer thing figured out this afternoon so I can burn off some energy during DS's nap. Assuming he takes one, big assumption right now.

ok y'all, some stranger guy "motivated" me on dailymile last night and, uh, i am not sure how to respond. to ignore it would be rude, but he's local and i don't know. don't want to seem like i am trying to strike up anything. weird. but also friendly. i just sent him a thank you.

jo - do you have a wall in front of your TM? hang a picture of the golden gate bridge on that sucker! i tell you, i drove over it the other day and got chills just thinking about running it in july! :

sparkle - holy cow, i just caught up with that big news story around here where a guy buried his wife at redwood on the west ridge trail ack! it happened in 06 but he just told them where to find the body in july 08.

mommajb - for the knee pain, hope you can get it figured out.

Aaack, I never heard about that. Obviously, I havent lived there for 10 years, but still, my dear friend IRL runs it all the time, I wonder if she knows. I have to say, there are always stories on any trail Ive always kept running them; double I use precautions, like not running during a time when I will be the only one, and not taking side trails that get into dense trees, and where I will be the only one, but for all the 100's of miles of trails around there, I guess its good there are so few of those stories

mommajb - I have an appt. with a FP doc who specializes in sports medicine. I think you can see a generalist and just be firm about what you know, what you want, and what you need them to do for you. I dont see doctors as the boss of me anymore I see them as my bitches, and .... NO, Im kidding but I am one of those *annoying* patients who wants them to do what I want

Morning ladies!

Gaye, I'm relieved Baxter is doing better and wish I could give your DH (the D is not for dear!) a smack upside the head. To do this to you is horrid but to your kid too is unspeakably selfish. Ugh.

mommajb, I am, if necessary, walking the mini. I am asking tomorrow what the heck is up with my foot. Hopefully we will both be running well by May (I have a promise to Geo spurring me on) but I am sorry to hear you are having pain now.

Forgive my dorkdom but here's the list so far of Mini plans:
mommajb: staying w/fam
bec: hotel
JayGee: driving up
RM: in town
drjen:
bbm:
geo:
b1: hotel
I'll keep a file and at some point collect cell phone numbers or something so we can all hook up in person. I am so excited for this and so glad to be doing it.

Best get to work...

I think I missed by 43 seconds or something like that. Doubly frustrating because my knee pain first got bad during the race I was using for my time and I walked quite a bit. I should have made it. ::: Shoulda, woulda, coulda isn't worth much though.

Thank you for all your dingo wisdom!! I have my dh seeing if I can see the athletic trainer at the college as a first step. If not maybe they will recommend somebody. :

:: for your situation. I am sorry this time could be so much harder on your ds and that you will be the one doing the explaining. I wish you didn't have to go through it too.

I want to be that way but unfortunately it might affect some other work and goals I have going in this small town. Maybe not. My doc just recently left the hospital to avoid bureaucracy. He has a real interest in the under-served which I truly admire. The problem is I am not geriatric, truly ill and I have insurance so I feel like I am wasting his time with this. There aren't enough docs in our rural area and I can 'cure' myself by not running. This would leave an opening in this kind man's schedule for someone that might not otherwise get desperately needed treatment and save my family $$$.

I did 3.2 with my friend. It was a crazy run. The trail was flooded in one direction, so we took roads with HUGE hills. The road loops around to the end of the trail, so we decided to try that end. About 1/4 mile in, we came to a flooded part, but it was only a little more than ankle deep and not really flowing, so we waded across it. We ran a little farther and came to a huge deep flooded part (maybe knee deep-and my friend was in pants), so we decided to just backtrack out of there. Our feet were soaked and sloshing, but it was really fun and we laughed a lot.

to you mommajb. Just wanted to throw in my :. I did something to my knee in the spring/summer of 2007. It wasn't a specific injury, more like overuse I guess. I remember not being able at all to bear weight/bend it going down steps. Unfortunately all this time later it is still an issue for me. I recently saw my family doc who diagnosed me with chondromalacia. As he explained it, it meant that the cartilage in my knee was roughened up and that was what was causing the pain (and the grinding - do you feel/hear grinding in your knee if you sit down and then extend it?). There's no cure, but he gave me PT exercises to do and emphasized keeping the quad muscle loose. The exercises are basically lots of quad and hamstring stretching (2 stretching exercises but you are supposed to do 15 reps) and then 2 strengthening exercises. I did want to say about the shoes... I used to have mild knee issues when it was time for new shoes, but never anything sharp/stabbing like what I get now with the chondromalacia. Good luck, it is so frustrating.

Gaye, I'm so sorry. I'll join in with some too. I hope he changes his mind. You have been so patient through this, and a rock for DS; I'm sorry that H isn't pulling his share.

Seems like there are a lot of possibly overly friendly people on dailymile. I too got friended by someone I don't know, but decided to ignore it. I can't figure out why anyone would friend me based on my oh-so-impressive current running cred if they didn't already know me.

: Working with physicians on research on a daily basis has removed the mystique for me, making it much easier for me to be one of those *annoying* patients too. No offense DrJen et al!

You ATL Dingos are really making me wonder if I could be ready for a 10K by July 4 (i.e. the Peachtree). But then there's that pesky matter of getting an application and a number. I definitely want to run it again someday.

So I did get my workout in last night. It was AMAZING. I'm more convinced than ever that I need to run. I was on the TM at the gym (which was packed) - smiling, and having to work hard to keep from singing out loud, and I had so much energy. Please please please let my knee and my boobs cooperate with me this time... :

OMG this sounds like our house dd2 has decided that getting up at 3:30 or 4am is a good idea. She plays for a bit and then starts screaming to get dressed and wakes up everyone else. : I am pretty sure the full moon isn't until the weekend.

Love the doggy's name

You are my training inspiration.

Yep-March. The good thing about the Peachtree is that nobody truly "races" it unless they're Kenyan and starting an hour before the rest of us.

Mommajb - oh dear, I missed that original post of yours Have you tried strengthening your quad[s]? The exercise I use whenever Im getting started is; sit on the floor, legs extended. Flex your quad[s] and hold for a count of 15. Do this 10x/day. When you get to the point where this no longer makes your quad feel tired or sore, do the same exercise, but put a small pillow under your knee, so you are pushing down on it. Once you can do these without fatigue, move on to weights, like leg extensions and squats, but make sure you do them slowly and with perfect form. If you havent tried a knee brace, I would. Either the kind that has a hole where the knee cap is or one that just hugs your whole knee. Both of these should take a lot of the pressure of the joint. I would do these before resuming running. I think you need a base level of quad strength to put that kind of force on the joint. As for doctors, I didnt mean to sound mean. But it has been my experience that I have never been helped to recover from anything by a doctor. I have had two knee problems in my running years; one I solved with a book (which Ive looked for but cant find anymore..) and one I got a referal to a PT who solved it. Same is true of my gynecologycal problems, and g.i. problems. Coupled with watching dh go through training and having several friends do so... I respect how much they know, and how much they can do, but realize how much they dont and how much I need to take responsibility for my health. Anyway. Dont give up. I think seeing someone from the university is a great start!

tjsmama- Ill add some fo' sho'

gaye~ That sucks. I'm sorry.

hbm~That run sounds awesome!

All these injury questions lately are making me think I better start some sort of strength training. It frequently seems to boil down to that. Do you think Wii Fit's strength-training program would be effective? (I canceled my gym membership once I started running all the time.)

phew. phone call was fine. Thank you for the good vibes!! she said he is improving and just to help him slow down during testing by helping him do it on his homework (which we've already been working on). Overall not too bad phone call. sigh. just wish I could help him more.

Eks~ISTEP is this big testing that the schools do. It's usually once a year starting in third grade, but this year they are wanting to start moving it to the end of the year instead of the begining, so they have to do the test twice this year to do that. it's timed, long, and stressful.
