I'm losing the sane fitness thing this month. I'm being pulled in 4,000 different directions and my health and fitness is suffering. I ask myself "when will this stop" the answer is usually "not in the forseeable future" so "Is it worth it?"

I have been working over the last couple of months to get my weight under control and get back into my old clothes (nevermind that they are out of style!) and just get healthier, more generally. I have been eating healthier, with fewer carbs and more protein (I always did well on the fruits and veggies). I have lost about 14 pounds so far and only have 6 left to go to get to my goal. I have stepped up the exercise but not nearly enough, so I really need to work on that. But I have a lot of "good" excuses up my sleeve! I work full-time outside the home, as does DH, so evenings are jam packed with dinner, DD's homework, spending fun time with DD. Weekends are filled with errands and spending as much fun time with DD as possible. So it is tough, but can't let that be my excuse anymore! We belong to a gym that I never go to, but we have some equipment at home (elliptical, free weights and two abdominal exercisers). I know what I really need to do is to spend my weekend mornings being more active, even if it is deep cleaning the house, rather than sitting here on MDC with my cup of coffee! Also, maybe getting up 30 minutes early to get on the ellipitcal, even if it is only for 20 minutes or so...

 

While I have managed to get myself on a positive track over the past month or so, I fear that I am going to lose momentum as I am travelling over the next weeks, which is stressing me out as it will be my first time away from DD. I guess I just need to remember that chocolate is NOT going to make it better. I will still be half away around the world, just with another pound to lose. But I know it will be tough, even if I am committed, as I find it much more difficult when I am overseas when I have to go to a lot of dinners in a culture less atuned to dietary "restrictions" and where the hosts typically serve you the portions (the more the merrier!). Maybe that will get me more motivated to hit the hotel gym while I am there to work off the extra calories.

laurakathy - one of my teachers put it this way....we'll find balance, then we'll lose it again, then we'll find it, then we'll lose it again.  time to find "it" again, whatever it is.  and perhaps the motivation is the process of remembering how it feels to move your body....knowing that you don't have to do it perfect, you just have to start.

 

amma_mama - wow, first time way from DD!  I remember my first time away....and yes, other cultures do tend to be all about stuffing you full of food.  a mix of the poverty mentality and the celebration.  however, in recent years i've just found that keeping food on my plate at least prevents people from adding more :)

I'm 32 years old and 65 pounds away from my goal weight.  My main goal is to lose weight.  I don't feel confident like this and being fat discredits me.

 

Fitnesswise I am weightlifting at the gym 3 times a week since Jan 1.  One of my goals is to be able to run a mile.

laurakathy - i don't know about motivation right now, i always imagine how good i feel after exercising

 

amma mama - i travel quite frequently, i actually like a night away -- i know dh does a great job

Hey all - I'm back after a brief hiatus.   I found out I'll start day shift Feb 21st - so that is exciting - I'm looking forward to a normal schedule.  My biggest news though is that maybe I'm so tired and a bit overweight because I have hypothyroidism - found out 5 days ago and started on meds.  So that was a revelation - I have been more tired and also my hair is thinner than it ever has been - a lot of things make sense now!  Also, my 5K date is set:  May 22nd!

 

Namaste - I understand crazy - sole income earning, overtime working ED nurse here...  One thing that helps is planning a vacation and making the date - even if it is one day - something to visualize and look forward to.  I also slow deep breathe when washing my hands - haha - I do that a lot at work :)

Hi.  Can I join? 

I found you in the middle of a how-can-I-get-fit crisis.   My greatest challenge is that I live in a city with no real recreation options.  There are no parks or public places.  To run in the neighbourhood means braving hysterically parking dogs and racing mini-bus taxis.  Time is a also a problem with 4 sons.  Anyway, I have recently realised that I would do well to find some good exercise videos that I can download from I-Tunes.  I have a yoga dvd that I like but I also need something more cardiovascular.  Does anyone have a good suggestion?  Something fun and comprehensive (maybe even incorporating free weights).  Maybe even dancey.  

I'm glad there are others dealing with the pressures of fitting this in with kids and work and the whole bit.

Well, I am half way through my trip and have been doing pretty well in terms of maintaining my diet...not a lot of time to eat during the day and I have been having light dinners in my hotel room most nights...Last night I did fall off the wagon - there was an office party with much drinking and eating and more drinking (I am in a fomer Soviet Republic so drinking and eating here is not for the faint of heart)...I did dance, so I am counting that as my exercise for the day ;-)  I did manage to get the gym today for a decent cardio workout and, now that I am over my jetlag, will hopefully get there at least a couple of more times over the next week.

 

I am looking forward, though, to coming home to my regular routine, where I can better control my food choices (and rarely waste calories on drinking). At the same time, I am trying to enjoy my trip since I have to be here, where I enjoy it or not. Unfortunately, "enjoyment" does not come without substantial calories in these parts...

Hello everyone!

 

I've enjoyed reading all of the posts thus far and I'd LOVE to join!

 

I'm a 25 year old Canadian mom of three amazing kiddos. My youngest is 4 months old.

I gained 40 lbs this pregnancy and even though the birth took off about 10 lbs, I re-gained 5 or so when my milk came in (I get really full, heavy breasts, which also isn't so great for looking good in my clothes or for exercising...).

 

I do have a gym membership at Goodlife but I only manage to get their once a week on Saturdays. I'd love to change that, but I have no car, a busy grad student hubby, a nursing baby, a broken breast pump, and I watch kids all day (mine plus one other that I babysit for some extra $).

 

My Goals Are:

 

* Get to the gym 3x per week, and to the Saturday morning yoga class

* Stretch everyday

* Work on fully closing my abdominal diastasis (ab muscle separation)

* Utilize my slow cooker more often so that I have more evening time for exercise

* Lose 30lbs (I'm 158lbs at 5'4") to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight

 

I'll try to check in every couple of days. I NEED the motivation you mamas provide!

I'd like to join. Sorry, haven't read all the posts, but I will catch up. My goals:

1. Eat more mindfully. Quit eating out of boredom/habit. Eat with joy vs cramming in some cheese on toast while reading my email. And yeah, I have 10 pounds I'd really like to see the back of.

2. Make more contacts in the community. I just moved to a new town in October, and still don't really know anyone. I have been going to a mommy & baby group once a week, but haven't reached out to anyone.

3. Re-incorporate yoga back into my life. Before I got pregnant (LO is now 10 months), I was very involved in yoga, and was planning on doing training to become an instructor (actually had already paid the deposit before I found out I was pregnant). I bought a few yoga while pregnant DVDs, but my pregnancy was hard on my body, and I ended up spending a lot of time lying down trying not to puke -- not to mention the month I spent lying down on the doctor's orders. So anyway, yoga has kind of gotten lost since then and I miss it.

Hello all!  I've had a pretty good week and have broken a sweat for 3 days straight.  I work the next two nights (ED nurse) and I count 13 hours running around as some form of exercise :)   My doc has told me to stretch after work, especially my pelvic ligaments - not quite sure how to do that, but I'm trying to figure it out - I've been having some hip pain...  suggestions wanted!

 

I've been using my elliptical machine, but our next door neighbors have a treadmill in their garage that we can use too, which will come in handy for starting my 5K training will all of the snow around... also ice storm tomorrow, whee!

Hi All! I hope it is not too late to join. I am the mother to 5 children: 15, 13, 10, 8, 4! I can't believe I have TWO teenagers! I am 38 and have always tried to stay active. I have never been super thin, but never too big either. Right now I think I am at my biggest:( In September we moved to an old farm house in the country. Since then I have not worked out. We used to live within walking distance to a gym, which I went to 3-5 times a week. I also jogged. I feel ashamed to admit I have done so little physical activity in the past 5 months that i get winded running up the stairs. UHG!

 

This move has left me depressed and lonely. I homeschool 2 of my children and babysit 2 times a week for a little girl. The house we are in is VERY cold and so I have been baking a lot and eating a lot.

 

I need to get fit and feel good about myself. When I workout, I am a happier person.

Goals for Feb.:

Workout or jog 5 times a week. One thread had minutes for working out Not a bad idea. I think 1,300 mins. Is a good number.

Start to decrease my sugar in take

Eat less

Try to do Yoga 3 times a week

 

On a side note KatSG- You don't have to answer this it you don't want, but what other symptoms do you have? My DH has been trying to get diagnosed for years now. He has numbing and tingling to the feet. He also is unsteady on his feet at times. He also has a lot of pain in his feet. Right now he is on a high dose of Vitamin D and somthing to help with the tingling feel. His thing looks a lot like MS, but is not it. If you want you can PM me off line.

 

So anyway I am excited to get fit and healthy!

For some strange reason, I'm not getting notification of posts on this thread! I had thought that no one posted anymore!

 

For my update, I want to say that I have NOT been to the gym as much as I've wanted to, but I did go last night and last weekend we went to something called Feb Fest which had ice slides and snow mazes, etc. and a lot of walking with the babe in the Ergo, so I think I got a good workout :)

 

We are planning on buying a car tonight (Yay!) so I'm definitely going to be able to get to the gym easier now. It is just waaay to cold and dark to walk there lately (about a 40 minute walk one way) in Canadian winter!!!)

 

So, I have lost some weight, which I attribute mostly to not eating as much and nursing a lot. Since hubby has been back at work, I've had a hard time eating enough, but I do eat LOTS of supper usually (nevermind the 6 slices of pizza I ate last night because I had only eaten a couple of bruschetta toasts and some kale all day) I am now 155 :) Very far from my goal weight, but at least things are moving in the right direction as opposed to remaining stagnant as it was previously.

 

I did get some bad news that I have Dysplasia (pre-cancer) and have to get laser treatment, but hopefully that goes well and doesn't keep me out of the gym for too long.

 

Anyone else have an update on their goals?

Sorry to hear about the Dysplasia - best wishes for the treatment. Also, good luck with getting back to the gym! Keep moving in the right direction, taking care of your body, and you will get to where you want to be!

 

I was travelling for two weeks and managed to not only maintain my weight but lose half a pound, though I indulged quite a bit on food and drink (but not nearly as much as I would have before I committed to taking the pounds off). I am now getting back to my regular regime, which is great as I have more control over my food choices and found that I can be very disciplined at home. I do need to get more disciplined with the exercise...jet lag is not longer a good excuse! I am working from home today so will try to get on the elliptical for at least 30 minutes and definitely more this weekend. I am revved up because I get to go clothes shopping this weekend as nothing fits anymore and I am within 5 pounds of my target weight (though I need to work on tonig what I have left). I had a few items tailored but others (like suit jackets) would be more costly than just buying something new that fits right.

That's great that you are so close to your goal weight! I wish I had an eliptical, that is my favorite machine at the gym :)

 

I feel like since this 3rd baby, even though I'm only 25, things are taking a LOT longer. I should feel lucky that after I have my babies, I don't have that huge 'still-pregnant' look. My stomache flattens pretty good. The problem is that my hips get sooo wide and take a long time to go back in. They are in a fair amount now, but I still can't fit into my 'fat' pants from before. I used to be a size 3 before DS #2, then after him I was a size 5 when I got preggo with DD (DS was only 18 months), now I'm a size 10!!! Well those are a bit big, but the size 9s I have are very tight.... :(  I just want to fit back into jeans! I can't afford new clothes.

 

I think that once DD hits 6 months, the weight will melt off more quickly. Since I'm breastfeeding that is. That's what happend with DS. At 6 months, the weight started coming of pretty good, then at 12 months, I almost immediately lost another 10lbs. But then 6 months later, I was preggo again!

 

Such is life..... :)

 

This week I want to:

* Get to the gym at least twice

* Use a workout video on days I can't get to the gym

* Drink more water!

I started the 30 Day Shred yesterday and I also did a postpartum workout DVD yesterday and the day before. I'm going to try and to do the 30 Day Shred on level one with no weights and then possibly repeat it on level one with light weights before continuing to level two, and then three. I am also going to try and still get to the gym 2-3 times per week, which will be easier once my new breast pump comes and if we can finally get a car!

 

Has anyone else done the 30 Day Shred? It's awesome! I actually don't like Jillian Michaels all that much, but her DVD is great. It's only 20 minutes, easy to do in your home, and it is very effective, which is what I NEED!

 

I'm also going to check out this site that a busy but super-fit mom friend recommened: bodyrock.tv  It is apparently great for home workouts!

I'm doing another "anyone still out there" check-in....

 

My new attempt at fitting in exercise is waking up extra early....my partner and I are switching off days. I was up and dressed at 4:45 this morning (yikes!), bundled up and went out for a walk. I actually ended up doing the first day of the couch-to-5k....but I haven't convinved myself I am going to go through with it....never been a huge fan of running. 

 

So far, the up early thing is working for us - but I don't know how long we can handle it - we haven't quite got the to-bed-earlier side worked out yet!

I am still here! I just had given up posting. It's crazy that you got up that early! Hubby has been getting up super early and hitting the gym at his work (at a university) every week day. I *so* wish I could get up and workout to a video in the morning as well, but I HATE mornings! Since it's getting bright in the mornings now, I think I'll try to get up and do it. During the day, I have an increased workload now that DH is going to the gym so early instead of doing all of his 'chores' that he did in the morning (garbage, recycling, dishwasher, etc.). Now I have to do all of that besides my own work and have no time to workout most days. I can't get all 4 kids to nap or be occupied at the same time! My gym membership is burning a useless hole in my pocket so I think I'll cancel it. I'm going to try and get up in the mornings as I've been wanting to for weeks now...!

Did you try to get up this morning? I am SOO with you on the morning thing - I love to stay in bed until the last possible minute! Once I am out of bed, I am fine....it is the transition I can't stand!

 

Didn't get up that early today - we, once again, have two sick girls....which means I didn't go to work so can't sneak in a lunch break walk. It is pouring or I would take them on a stroller ride...we'll see how these fevers play out (one had a 103.4 in the middle of the night!!!), maybe I can get out after DP gets home from work....or after bedtime....

 

I have some exercise videos but don't think they will let me get away with that today.

I totally did not get up this morning. In fact, I slept in until 7:30 and the little boy I babysit gets here at 7:45! I'm going to have to open the black out shades and let the morning light shine in because that is the ONLY way I've sucessfully gotten up early in the past (I have no problems with it in the Summer when I leave the shades open).

 

That sucks that the little ones are sick :( My little guy (2) woke up and cried in the middle of the night and we had to go get him and put him in our double bed that we already share with DD who is 5 months old. I really hope to get in a video today. I desperately want to start the 30 day shred over again since it got interrupted last time with my surgery. I also got a hold of the P90X series of videos and I'd like to see just how much they kick my ass!

 

My only advice to you is to not worry about getting in a crazy workout while your kiddos are sick. What I try to do when I can't exercise at all is to do kegels and standing abdominal tightening throughout the day. I also squat while I'm brushing my teeth! I always do the cat/cow yoga position in the shower too. When I'm carrying laundry up the stairs I clench my glutes and abs and try to do 2 steps at a time. Every little bit helps right??!

So, I've been doing okay....I started the second week of the Couch-to-5k....still not 100% sold that I want to finish it, but it is getting me out and moving which is totally what I need. I feel so much better afterwards...but the too-little-sleep is hurting around noontime. So - if I am going to stick with it (which I hope to) I have to get myself to sleep earlier!

 

We also just got a cast-off stair machine from our neighbor - haven't used it yet but figure it will be something for those sick days, etc....they may be passing along an exercise bike, too...that would be great.

 

So...this 30-day shred video you are doing...is it like aerobics? Do you need any equipment or just a DVD player?

That's great that you've been sticking to a program for 2 weeks! I'm not convinced I want to be a runner either. It seems glamorous and all but everytime I've tried to be a runner (sometimes even trying for a year), I end up with sore knees and bored of my workouts come Winter. I tried Winter running and it just burned my lungs too much. Walking is a super great workout though, so congrats to you for doing that consistently!

 

We walk much less now that we have a car. I NEVER get to the gym, so I'm going to cancel my membership. It's awesome that you say you got a stairclimber because we also got an cardio machine this week! DH went and bought me an Elliptical that was on sale 1/2 price!!! It's a new 2011 model and is sooo nice. I love it! I've been using that with the Elliptical Trainer app I bought for my iPod touch (my 5 year old iPod died about a year ago and I've been saving up and bought the previous gen iPod).

 

Anyhow, I digress. The 30-Day Shred is great. I actually just finished it today! It's super that it's only 20 minutes because that's about all the time I have to spare when I'm home alone with the kids. My 2yr old does it with me and he can do the real push ups while I just do the girly ones ;)

 

All you need for it is light hand wieghts (I use 5lbs but wish I had 3lbs for a couple of the exercises). If you want, you could use filled water bottles as that would probably suffice at first. DH goes to the gym every day and he tried to do the level one with me this weekend and it was HARD on him. He used 8lb weights and said that some exercises were too easy that way but lots were super hard. It was tough on his legs (and mine!). It's really fun though!

 

Let me know if you give it a try!

 

Also: My friend has has wicked results using bodyrock.tv  I may try that after I do the shred.

So I did W2D2 of the couch-to-5k....toughest day so far...in terms of getting out of bed to do it and tired muscles afterwards!! But, it felt good to have it done BEFORE the kids woke up and the snow started to fall. But now I am at work (sshhhh) and want a nap!! I do think, though, that I may try to stick this out a bit.....

 

Where did he get the elliptical? We have considered doing one of those or a treadmill....for now we will stick with the freebie, but we are keeping our eyes out. Have fun with it!

 

I just requested the 30-day Shred thru the library - I'll try it out but if my history with workout videos stays true, it won't ever leave the case before it is due back at the library!!! Ha!
