Mel, congrats on an awesome 5k. I'm a sprint-to-the-finish runner (quite often even on my training runs from home- my neighbours think I'm a bit nuts as I run around the corner at full speed), but have often heard that if you've paced right you shouldn't have so much in reserve at the end. I guess I always hold something back just in case, and let it go in the end. shrug.gif

Dimitrizmom, congrats on your mudrun! Sounds amazing!!

jo, you sound so blessed and so grateful for the things in your life right now, put in perspective in contract to the past year. May your summer continue to be everything you dreamed of :)

Shanti, hugs. Your son sounds so supported by you, his teachers and his boss. I hope you can find a way to a sooner referral. I have had good luck in the past calling a specialist office and pleading my case and asking to be put on a cancellation list. The whole situation is so terribly mismanaged and makes me feel sick. grouphug.gif

Gaye, I want to join your kickball league. I'm assuming the drinks are alcoholic?

NRR- I had the acupuncture and got a new sinus irrigation thing that works even better than the neti pot. I think I had a pretty raging sinus infection that is still draining, but I'm feeling better finally a week after it all started.  I also worked a night shift in L&D last night (I know- totally not in keeping with my need for self-care) and was soooo close to catching a baby. The doctor arrived just a couple of minutes before the birth, and I was there with hands poised thinking she wasn't going to make it in time.

Also an update from May on my youngest daughter's lupus testing- I called the doc for results last week and found out the liver/kidney function tests and complete blood count were all normal,  but results for the inflammatory markers were still not back. The next morning they called to say the lab messed up and never drew them. We went back on Wednesday and she had them re-drawn, so we're once again waiting for results.

RR- I bought new trail runners yesterday. New balance has discontinued their trail runner and is focusing on minimalist shoes (which don't come in narrow widths). Nobody is making a narrow width trail shoe now. I'm trying out some mizuno trail runners that seem to have a narrower fit. My running today? Sprinting around the BMX track and pushing my youngest up the highest hills so she wouldn't roll backwards. It was actually a pretty decent little workout after a week of for sinuses.

mel38~Congrats on the PR! Awesome job!

dimitrizmom~WTG!

melw~Well, really, the drinks can be whatever you would like, as long as it's a liquid, but yeah...the league has a discount worked out with a local liquor store for a deal on pony kegs! orngbiggrin.gif

Not a bad day here. My ride was really nice, and I made it back with plenty of time to spend some time with the kiddo. We joined some friends for Jazz in the Park (free concert in City Park), and that was nice, although DS was definitely tired and kind of driving me crazy. It was a beautiful night to hang out at a free concert, although not nearly as convenient as last night's concert! And I'm on call tonight, but when I called this afternoon to see what it looked like, I was told that it was highly unlikely and that they were actually floating people to the NICU (so they would have to recall our float people before calling in a call person). I should call and just get cancelled, but it's kind of nice earning $5/hr for sitting on my couch. orngtongue.gif

rr~I had a really nice ride with the team this morning. We rode up in the mountains, and it was COLD when we got up there. Upper 40's and windy...which I was not really prepared for. Luckily, it warmed up pretty nicely (and I had grabbed a couple of extra layers on the way out the door) except for the wind. We rode about 30 miles, up and over Swan Mtn (my nemesis where I bonked during last year's century...and today discovered that it really wasn't that bad!), into Breckenridge, and then back around the lake to the marina where we started. A little climbing, a (very) little distance, it was good. I think tomorrow, I should probably swim in preparation for that tri that I signed up for in two weeks. Yikes.

Danube, what do you wear?

Minimalist dingoes, the running store worker tells me that there are no narrow minimalist shoes because the toes are supposed to spread/grip. I'm a bit more concerned about the rest of my foot being sloppy or slipping heel. Thoughts?

I remember moutainmama giving a great primer/comparison of minimalist shoes and width in jan/feb(?) thread. Should go check. In many ways I'm the ideal candidate for them, since I rarely run anything except trails.

Gaye, my bootcamp trainer works as the local marketing/sales rep for a big brewer. But we don't drink during bootcamp, just talk about what we're going to drink after!!

Finally caught up!

Shanti - My thoughts are with you and your son.  I hope you can get an appointment for him with a specialist and get some real answers.

Mamajb - I AM on FB now!!!  I finally convinced my husband that the world wouldn't explode if I had facebook on my phone and kindle.  I tried to join the Dingo FB group, but I think it needs approval or something.

Plady - I understand how that depression can just creep up on you.  I hope you are feeling better soon!

JG - I have been dumped by friends like that before.  It always leaves me sad and confused.  I hope she comes around.

RR: I just got back from spending a week with my BFF, driving her out to Arizona where she just moved.  It was really hard to leave her there and fly back alone.  I did get one good run in.  She lives in between Phoenix and Flagstaff, and is at 5000 feet.  So, I had a very hilly run on her dirt road at altitude.  It felt good, but was hard.  I am going to be swimming in a small lake this evening for tri class.  And, I think trying on wetsuits in 90 degree weather in a store where their AC was clearly broken counts as a workout!!!  Those are not easy things to get into!

MelW, I don't know how the non-toed minimalist shoes tighten, but most of the VFFs have lacing/strapping systems that tighten them up like socks, more or less wrapping the foot to an extent, depending on the shoe. I just peeled off a toenail yesterday that gave up after the last time I ran in regular shoes. My toes definitely spread and my whole foot sort of reaches and flexes almost like my hands do on the floor doing yoga. My feet are sloppy in shoes. They are wide to begin with and spread a lot, and I'm kind of hypermobile...end result is that less shoe is better, and no toe box means no banging around inside a toe box.

Looks like storms today, so no run. Starting tomorrow, I'll be back on the trail daily, kids will be at the park daily, and I'll be sleeping in our "own" beds, so I should be feeling like less of a crazy monster.

Hey Mamas,

Shanti - I've been thinking of you and sending out prayers.  Geo's got great advice I think on not pulling yourself together for appointments and doctor discussions.  I really hope you're able to make contact with a specialist soon.

Mel38 - Great race!  And super great picture too!

BBM - Speaking of great pictures!  I hope you're getting enlargements of those, it souds like a ball.

Dmzmom - And you too!  That's an amazing time even without factoring in shoe-sucking mud pits.

Gaye - How is your health?  It sounds like you've come out the other side from that sore throat nightmare.

Real - Good luck with the campaign!  I really hope you have success!  If you speak as clearly as you write and I have no doubt that you do I think you'll be converting the McMansionites in no time.

Jo - I hope you get to finally start catching up on rest, I believe you are long overdue.

MelW - I think you might like the way the VFFs cinch down around your foot. They really do fit like socks so I'd guess that it wouldn't matter if they are a standard width.

Bec - That's nice that you got to travel with your friend, but I can imagine the lonely feeling coming home without her.

RR: Nothing much, I started PT last week and she gave me some exercises to do (bridges, squats, a subtle ab thing for the transverse abs).

NRR: I felt better for a day or so after my revelation and then kind of sank back into a wanting-to-crawl-back-into-bed mood.  But still, better than the worst.  I'm really trying to stay consciously grateful for the many many gifts in my life.  Tangentially, my mom is moving back to CT after her lease in So. Cal is up at the end of Sept.  I'm going to take Ali G down for a visit at the end of August just for 6 days for one last visit before it becomes a major ordeal and expense to see her.  As difficult as it has been to have her living nearby and as frustrating and disappointing as our relationship often is it is still a bit of a blow to hear that she's moving even farther away.  Mommajb, I'd love to get together while I'm there but I know that with so few days I won't be able to swing it (unless you have any interest in meeting at Disneyland, because I do think I'll take dd there as a special treat for her birthday).

Phew... I'm finally caught up on thread too, thanks to a much needed rainy day here.

Real ~ our school district in Indiana passed a successful bond issue in 2010.  You might want to google Monroe County Community School District and see if they have any info on their website about the bond.  The supporters really went all out for it, and it helped a lot.

Plady ~ hug2.gif I'm sorry you're feeling depressed.  It's so hard when it seems to sneak up on you like that.  Have fun in California.

Mel and BBM ~ GREAT pictures!!!!

jooj ~ enjoy being back in your own beds tonight smile.gif

bec ~ I will try and friend you on FB!

tjsmama ~ nice long ride over the weekend!

Shanti ~ you and your son have been in my prayers.  In fact, I mentioned it to my family yesterday morning and all three of my kids remembered him in their prayers too.  I hope you can get some answers and an appointment MUCH sooner than November.

RR ~ finished Week 1 of C25K with no pain at all in my leg.  Here's to week 2!

NRR ~ The first week of swim team went well, and everyone seems to be getting used to the early wake ups.  First meet is tomorrow night.  DS finished select soccer tryouts on Saturday and they are posting the teams this afternoon.  He keeps obsessively checking the league website!

I am so mad I am speechless. Just for now, mind you, I will calm down shortly and gather myself because this evening I will start my list of calls trying to find a shortcut through the system. I was at work today when dh walked in to tell me that ds had just been taken from school to the hospital by ambulance because of a 15 minute seizure. Hope I didn't lose my job by just walking out with him and getting into the car - it was a slow day and the girl I was working with said GO and I couldn't gather myself to go check with my boss. Not smart but there wasn't a Help Wanted sign in the window when we drove past on our way home. Will go in first thing tomorrow and apologize and hope I can continue there. I really need that job but  - never mind, I know you guys get it. Talk about a waste of time and taxpayer's money. The ER doctor was no help at all. She did check his med levels and they are safe - just not doing anything at all to control the seizures. Ds' paediatrician not on call today so she consulted with another one and they adjusted his dose but it was clear they are just playing a guessing game and don't know what is going on.  When I asked for help in moving up the neurologist appointment I was told that the waiting times are what they are in a rude way.  Maybe, but I will be calling tomorrow and pushing for something sooner. If we can come up with another neurologist referral on our own we will go there but will keep the fall appointment standing until something better comes up. They also ordered a sleepless EEG to get a better idea of what is going on but no date yet on when they can do that. ds fell asleep at the hospital and had a couple of seizures but only I witnessed them and I got the sense the doctor didn't even believe me. She was clearly unconcerned and uninterested because she had nothing to offer and that was frustrating. There is a way to communicate that you are stumped and make your patient and their advocates feel like you care and want to help but this doctor had none of that going on. You don't have to have all the answers but if I believe you care, I can live with that as long as I feel like we are working together to solve a serious problem. banghead.gif

Oh, NO Shanti! That's awful! I don't understand how they can just blow you off. What if you ask to go to a different province or something? Can you do that? That is NOT ok. Is there a patient ombudsman or advocate that can help you navigate the red tape? There has to be some way to get someone's attention and reinforce that this is a serious situation that needs to be addressed NOW. I'm so upset for you and ds. It just doesn't make sense that when a child needs help emergently they just leave him to flounder and say, 'them's the breaks!' Grrrr.... hopmad.gif

Our health insurance is only for our province and we have more options here that in any other province in the country. Then there is the reality that the province directly to the east of us is an 8 hour drive from here and the province to the west of us is a 24 hour drive. This is where we just start using any connections we have to push the system which just makes me angry because what about patients who don't have the resources to do that for themselves? It isn't right. I have a few leads and will start figuring out which way to go tonight and tomorrow. I hate this.

:(  I just logged in to ask you if your DS was better today.  :(  :hopmad  So when we lived in MI, there were a few stories in the paper about Canadians coming to UM for treatment they couldn't get soon enough in Canada.  I can get you a few names of pediatric neurologists at U of M if you thought there would be any possibility you could swing it.  That's where my friend takes her daughter for her hydrocephalus.

Today was our first day of summer.  Kids home with me.  Me taking some time (I still worked 3.5 hours today, getting more done than I would have at work), and my house is clean and the kids are starting to decompress.  DD has already finished her 15 hours of reading for the summer reading club.  :lol  DS is well on his way as well.

Right! That they are listening... that's it's a person experiencing seizures -  your son!! Sounds like one of those insensitive doctors on tv. greensad.gif

Right, I agree with you in principle. But put that out of your mind for now. Justice is one thing, and helping your son another. Don't feel bad for taking advantage of anything and everything that is at your disposal. And I hope that it works.

Your poor DS. I'm so sorry. greensad.gif I hope that he is feeling better tonight.

Shanti - I'm not sure I'll have any useful suggestions since I'm used to the US system, but here's a couple anyway.  I don't know anything about your insurance issues, but I practiced in a rural area where patients had to travel to access specialist care and appts were often months away, even if we could find someone to see a patient  1.  Is there a children's hospital in your province?  If so, consider taking him to the ER there.  Even the ER docs are usually more experienced with kids' issues and can hopefully be more helpful.  2.  Call the neurologist's office yourself.  Find out if they will consider expiditing a referral if the doctor calls personally with the more recent and urgent information.  Often I could get a referral moved up if I called the specialist myself as the primary doc and explained the urgency.   If I couldn't get a referral sooner, I could often get the specialist to tell me what to try in the meantime. If they will consider it, then ride your primary doc until he calls 3.  Find out if your local hospital or the health system has a patient advocate.  If they do, appeal for help.  4.  Contact your local politician and find out if there is any string to be pulled that way.  It's not acceptable for him to have continuing and accelerating symptoms with no help being offered!

Plady - thanks for the sticker!  It was so fun to find it in the mail!

MelW - do you have results for dd yet?

NRR - I miss you guys!  Life is just busy all the time, I feel like!  Catherine graduated high school, and my mom and aunt were here for it.  Also my oldest son and dil came for the weekend and brought their dogs.  It was a little chaotic.  Then they all left and we had a slumber party for little dd's birthday, and then a crazy work week, and this weekend we drove back to IL to do some work on the house we can't sell.  (sigh.)  This weekend Catherine and dh will head to Ohio for her summer orientation, and next wednesay is my 20th wedding anniversary, followed the next week by ds's 15th birthday.  And then July is almost worse ...

RR - I ran another half marathon last weekend, the Hospital Hill Half Marathon here in Kansas City.  As you can guess, any race with "hill" in the name is probably pretty hilly, and that was defintely the case!  It was a perfect weather day, though, and I had a great race.  Ended up finishing in 1:57:36 - not quite a PR, but I was happy with it for such a hilly race.

I just decided to run the Twin Cities Marathon October 7.  My son and dil live about 2 hours south of there and I'll combine a trip to visit them with the marathon.  I'll officially start training next week already!

plady~Hang in there, sister. Thinking of you and sending you lots of goodvibes.gif and hug.gif I'm feeling better, but still having some effects. Still with a weird aftertaste/film in my mouth, and my rash thing seems to have flared back up a little. I don't know, I guess I'm just kind of ignoring it at this point and hoping that it will disappear entirely...

shanti~I am so hopmad.gif on your and your DS's behalf. There has got to be an answer, I just wish I knew what it was. grouphug.gif

drjen~Great race! You have gotten soooo speedy! We miss you around these parts, but believe me...I understand the crazy life thing!

Not too much excitement today...a little bit of a sleep-in, a trip to the Y for a swim, impromptu pedicure with a girlfriend, and tball. FYI, tball is really stinking cute, and I love how much DS loves it!

rr~1800 yds in the pool. The first 500 or so of which I spent fighting with my leaky goggles, until I figured out that trying to tighten the side that was leaking was actually pulling the goggle away and making it leak more and that I actually needed to tighten the other side. rolleyes.gif I felt pretty good, other than the fact that my shoulders and neck are now killing me. orngtongue.gif

Shanti, I agree with all of Dr Jen's strategies. Also consider calling Sick Kids for faster referral (since I think you're pretty far from just driving to their ER?)
Maybe here: http://www.sickkids.ca/AboutSickKids/Directory/Listings/N/Neurology-Epilepsy-Monitoring-Unit-EMU-Clinic.html
If your referral is to a pediatric neuro there, the listing for their secretaries is here: http://www.sickkids.ca/Neurology/Who-we-are/Administrativ-support/index.html

Blood tests are back- no lupus!!! We head to the mainland to see the pediatric immunologist in two weeks for allergy follow-up.

Shanti--I'm so sorry. Sending prayers that you can get help for him much more quickly. The whole thing makes me so sad and angry at the same time.

DrJen--congrats on your half and have fun training for the marathon!

tjsmama--I'm going to remember your goggles tip.

MelW--yay for no lupus! That's great news.

JayGee--thanks for the link.

Geo--have fun with the kids!

RR/NRR: just saw an ad for a new race in Granby: the Summit Assault. Runners start at the base of one of the ski hills at Granby Ranch and run up to the top: five miles, 2000 feet of elevation gain. Then we take the chairlift down.

This is totally calling my name. It's in September. Now to figure out how to best train for running 5 miles at an approximately 7% incline. orngbiggrin.gif

Thanks, everyone. I have a friend in Toronto whose husband is going to see if he can get the name of a  paediatric neurologist Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children who can see ds sooner than at the other Children's Hospital. He has some good connections there and will get further than I ever could. If so, then we give that name to our pediatrician and request a referral there and we will be good to go. Until you are under their care, patients cannot call a specialist directly and ask to be seen. Once we have the initial appointment out of the way it will be much easier to get things moved up and to work closely with the doctor and their team - it is just getting to that point that is so hard. Last night I talked with a friend who is a wonderful family doctor and he gave some good tips on how to get better support from the pediatrician. Unfortunately ds has one of the less stellar paediatrician's in our area but because it is a rural area there are a lot of politics that can't be messed with that mean we can't just switch to the ped in the next office, even if she would be better. In the city it would be easier but our friend said it is really essential for ds that we follow protocol. I am keeping him home for school today to rest and so later today the two of us can sit down and strategize how he will complete these last two weeks of school. I can't wait for that piece to be out of the way for a couple of months!

Shanti - I'm fuming for you.  I am left speechless with how broken these health care systems are.  The US has some pretty obvious and glaring problems, but this model seems to have huge issues too.  When politics and red tape prevent a child from getting the medical care he needs, something is clearly wrong!  I hope you get some help and information soon!

5 miles straight up?  Hmmmm.  Not sure I can get behind that kind of craziness!

Jen - You have gotten so fast!!

RR: I did about 2000 yards in the lake last night (I'm guessing at the yardage a little).  It was a good swim.

yeahthat.gif My thoughts exactly, bec.  Glad you had a good swim.  I sure do miss lake swims (wave of nostalgia for Bloomington....)

Week 2 Day 1 of C25K done, run up and down and up and down my street (.2 miles each direction) while the kids watched Phineas and Ferb bag.gif.

I'm also jealous of your lake swims, Bec. Are you swimming in a wetsuit? What are your temps like?

Brief post from the phone

JayGee, congrats on the C25K, and the strategy to get it done!

Real, I'm planning a similar race up our local ski hill in late July, though the route is only 6km up. My bootcamp trainer is doing a weekly ascent run that should be perfect training if I can make it.

My sinus infection has almost cleared. Hoping for some RR soon!!!

Blech. I just started checking into flights for USAT nationals in August. Yeah, the cheapest flight I can find is $500, with two layovers. :-( There's got to be something better, right? This is totally a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but still...that is WAY more than I was hoping to spend. Guess I should have saved my miles for this trip and paid for my flights to NYC. Hindsight...

rr~A quick 3 miles before my new grad class this morning, dodging sprinklers.

tjsmama--don't do two layovers. That's a disaster waiting to happen. The time we did it--because we used our frequent flier tickets and that's all they would give us, the first flight was delayed and we missed our connection to Chicago. They ended up sending us on a different airline but for a while it looked like we were gonna be stranded in Iowa for 24 hours. Have you looked into flying into Albany and driving up from there? it's about a 3-hour drive but can save you a fair amount. We've done it a few times when Rochester, Buffalo and Syracuse were all too pricey. We did it the time we met up with the family in Vermont too.

Shanti--I hope the connection works out for you.

MelW--hope your nose is clear tomorrow.

JayGee--how was the swim meet?

Gaye, have you looked into Manchester, NH for flights? We have flown into that airport for pretty cheap before.

The swim meet was great! Both kids swam well. DD won her breaststroke race, but got DQed for a one hand touch. DS's team got first in the Free relay!! The whole thing made me nostalgic for 30 years ago, when I swam summer league. Except my kids are better than I ever was! The kids really enjoyed the whole thing. They will not be loving it at the 6:30 wake up this morning though.

Jo, I have been meaning to ask how your eating is going with being home? I need to get back on the wagon (again) myself.

MelW - your boot camp class sounds fabulous!

Yeah, it looks like I'm going to fly into Manchester on SW. It's still nearly $300, but I can do that and rent a car for less than I can fly into Burlington. I'm hoping to have someone to split hotel and rental car costs for me, but I'm not positive on that. And of course, I need at least a small SUV to be able to fit the bike in, so I can't go super cheap on the rental. Oh well. Once in a lifetime, right? rolleyes.gif

Tonight starts my stretch of working 6 out of the next 8 nights. Wish me strength. At least DS flies to Ohio tomorrow, so I should hopefully be able to get a little more sleep in without him around. And maybe a short workout here and there. We'll see, I guess.

rr~6 AM track this morning. Ouch, that hurt. Both the getting up part and the actual running part. We did 400's, 8 of them with 100 recoveries in between. Ouch.

Good luck with the work schedule, Gaye. And yes, once in a lifetime. It will be unforgettable.

Shanti, you have been on my mind constantly. I hope that between your friends, and Mel's and drjen's advice, something moves the right way right now. As others have said, the whole "system" idea is great in theory but when your kid is sick and triage programs are missing him, don't feel bad about getting him the help he needs. Hugs, mama.

It's been just about chilly here, and I am loving the weather. Have not had a lot of opportunity for exercise this past week (or sleep for that matter), but yesterday I took the kids to play all day with friends while I visited with their mom (also a friend), and we came home to dinner waiting (thanks to cooking soup late the night before), then all read on the couch until I couldn't see straight (I think it was 830). I am in the absolute worst stage of my recently increasing PMS symptoms. Probably need a lot more sleep. Long daylight has been messing with me, too.

JayGee, thumb.gif I am doing pretty well! I managed to find a halal store just a half hour away and stocked up on some meats, and the groceries here have everything I could want. I have tasted a thing here and there, including accidentally swallowing a toaster tart (!) when I should have been sleeping, but I recommitted to another real Whole 30. Need to cut down on nuts and dried fruits again and add in more vegetables. After my coffee this AM, will head out for a trail walk (run if I feel like it). But it feels like I was born to eat this way, which makes it a lot easier. I have never been on a diet and said, I want to eat like this forever. Something is different here, I think.

Love to all. Will be sending out energy to each of you from the trail this AM.

Gaye, not sure if it's too late yet, but I'm about 3 hours from Burlington and the closest airport to me is Hartford. You could fly in here, stay with me except for the night right before, etc. Not sure if that is cheaper or works for you but consider it offered with a whole heart! love.gif

Last couple days of school here...

My schedule for next year is looking pretty good, so far (shhhh....spit three times on the ground around me to ward off the evil eye pth pth pth Peace.gif lol.gif).

Solid 7 this morning in the early a.m....

I think I need a nap now though.
