Welcome to the September thread. run.gif

New visitors to the Dingo Thread may ask, "but, what is a Dingo?"

Dingoes are mamas (defined loosely, when needed) who run, walk, cycle, tri, and participate in whatever sport they need to sustain their awesome mama selves in lives that are definitely dynamic. Sometimes, a Dingo is injured, or life takes a turn, and she has to take a break from her chosen sport. Whether active or aspiring, Dingoes support one another in spirit. When two Dingoes are in the same place at the same time, something incredibly special happens. This is called a Dingo Meetup. They are relatively rare, and so we try to record them with photographic evidence.

Are you a Dingo? You just might be, if:

You sometimes perform acts of brilliance in order to squeeze a workout into a busy week.

You're never ashamed of coming in at the back of the pack, even if you're used to coming in faster.

You have found yourself sincerely respecting and admiring moms in all forms, observing how they're doing it for love, and growing from their experiences as well as your own

You won't know until you try, and all comers are welcome.

coolshine.gif Happy September!

Thanks for the copy Jo! blowkiss.gif

Today is finally the beginning of the year I think.  Both girls will be off on the bus and I've got a to-do list that is scary long.

Bec - I think you definitely get extra credit!

kerc 09-04-2012 09:20 AM

two more days left with my girlies. And, gulp, first day of class tomorrow. So much that I've been procrasting, and now I have to actually do it.

shantimama 09-04-2012 10:03 AM

Yay - September is here!!

Sunday was my last day at the cafe. I may get called in to help a few times over the next month but probably not. At some point I am going to have to start daily power walks just to maintain the fitness I got at work just by doing my job but my feet are still too sore to start that just yet. Maybe tomorrow. I am having a lot of hip and lower back trouble so running is still off the table. Is it terrible of me to already be hoping for an early, snowy and long winter just so I can get lots of snowshoeing in?

My kids are back to school today. I can't believe that dd1 is at her first day of high school. How did that happen??? She was nervous this morning but mostly okay. ds is excited to be back and we go to the epilepsy clinic next week - FINALLY!! dd2 is not very happy about heading back to school so I am preparing myself for the worst when she gets home this afternoon. I will be starting a couple of online courses shortly but I am taking a little time to recover from the summer. I am so very tired and need to get my house back in order - making headway on that but it is taking some time. I have a lot of unpleasant stuff on my plate right now so I am trying to pace myself.

kerc -  I hope tomorrow goes really well  hug.gif

Realrellim 09-04-2012 10:54 AM

Quick drive-by!

kerc--ugh and good luck.

Nic--hope you're feeling better.

tjsmama--hope you find your mojo.

on school: yes, they know it's $36. Two words: tea. party.

There's not that many but they are loud so there's a bit of an echo box effect going on. Some are also trying to drum up the more national resentment against public employees in general. The superintendent did one of her morning community talks this morning and someone asked her why she hadn't taken a pay cut. Her answer: I have, 17 percent, a year or two before the teachers took their 3 percent cut. Basically, the opposition is anti-tax and tea-minded and there's lots and lots and lots of lies and probably voucher talk lurking in the background.

RR: none. !!!!! Hopefully the minute the kidlet stops nursing.

NRR: apparently burned the candle at both ends too long. Got up to the mountains Friday evening, managed to come down with some GI-bug over night. It was quick thanks to some immodium that DH picked up, but I slept until about 3:30 that afternoon and was back in bed by 10:30 that night. And laid down a few times in between. Yeesh. We did a short 4-mile hike on Sunday, boated yesterday and then the skies were too stormy to run. Figured my body needed a break anyhow.

JayGee 09-04-2012 11:15 AM

Yay! September!

Plady and sparkle - love hearing about your meetup! In fact, I loved it so much I ended up dreaming of a meetup with Plady, Jooj, and sparkle that night!

Kerc - good luck today!!

Real - when does your issue come up for vote? I will be hoping and praying that it passes. Why don't people value education???

Shanti - it must be a relief to be done with the job. I am thinking of you during the difficult transition. Hope you get that early snow!

Plady - re: the hip. It is better, but not perfect. At PT they are ARTing the heck out of my piriformis which is where the nerve compression is occurring. Other exercises include clams, lots of pelvic tilts against a wall, pelvic rotation on a ball, and some core exercises. My family finds the pelvic rotations particularly amusing when I do them at home.

RR - I ran a little yesterday! Just a block or two at a time during my walk. It hurt my hip and butt a bit, but felt so good to actually run.

NRR - sugar free for 4 days now and emerging fom the fog. Thank goodness.

shantimama 09-04-2012 12:03 PM

JayGee - 4 days. I think I can do that. I was really good for most of the summer but slipped somewhere recently. Staying dairy, gluten and sugar free while working my butt off in a cafe with amazing food was too difficult to maintain. At lunch today I drank the last of the Diet Coke that somehow found its way into my house and the last piece of chocolate. Then I made a huge pot of chick pea and kale soup so that it is ready to turn to when I want something quick and easy. I also stocked up on green tea and I will start drinking it first thing in the morning to try to head off caffeine cravings.

Have I mentioned here that one of the women I worked with and I are going to try to do some catering together over the winter? She is still working at the cafe until it closes mid-October so between now and then we are seeing what Public Health requires of our kitchens, working on menus and trying to spread the word. We work well together and have similar ideas about what our limits are and what would go over well in our community. Last night I was playing around with ideas for our "brunch-in-a-basket" stuff and baked a chai coffee cake with a maple glaze. There isn't much left so I think that recipe is a go! We want to offer baskets with a variety of muffins, scones, coffee cakes, etc for people to serve, soup and bread baskets for lunches or people who have been ill (huge elderly population in our town), prepared appetizers for dinner parties and meals for small gatherings or families. We don't intend to stay and serve, just prepare the food and deliver it. It is amazing how many people want to serve home cooked meals without having to do any of the prep themselves. The cafe we worked at has a distinct way with food and even though we will be creating and using all of our own recipes and not any of his, it will be a nice carry over for the fall/winter/spring season when he is closed. I hope it all comes together.

I'm training for my first half marathon at the end of september - just took my first 8 mi long run yesterday.  A bit sore today but this half marathon thing is feeling doable.

Ooh... I just noticed the race list.  I'll be doing the Wineglass half in Corning, NY (it's september 30).

I'm also planning the "color me rad" race in Albany NY on the 22nd...

Plady and Sparkle...ahem, I've met ya' both, definitely GORGEOSSITY for both of ya'll loveeyes.gif (I don't care that it's not a word. You're lucky I feel like using capital letters today.) blowkiss.gif

ETA: eep what I meant by using capital letters is not about the word in all caps (hell, it deserves bold font and stars around it), just about my habit of usually posting using all lower case.....carry on

Were there no pictures or evidence taken of such breathtaking beings in the same place at the same time?  Would it cause a rift in the space/time continuum?love.gif

Soooooo, speaking of races, race lists and what was I thinking!  I am signed up for the Kentucky Derby Marathon on April 27, 2013 and the Indy Mini Marathon on May 4, 2013!  This is what peer pressure does to me!

I'd really like to chat, but just got home 3 hours ago, which have been absorbed by cooking, bathing, bedtime, and now studying. I was seriously considering dropping one of my classes, but decided not to, so now have to bust a move to get back on track (or find the track lol.gif)

On that note, if anyone has evidence of a writing error (student papers anyone? something random you edited Jo?) I need one by tomorrow night, and while I can find one online or in one of my grammar-for-english-teachers books, I dont think that's what they have in mind, but I dont see how I can find an error in, say, the NYT, or any other texts I read. So if I cant find anything else, I'll use what Ive got, but thought something more organic would be better.

Epic week in the PNW. First of all, I think I am finally thawing out. Can you say cold.gif I dont think I ever got warm except when I was in bed or the shower....

Nic - If you can find the time, try a used furniture or thrift store; I always see file cabinets at these!

Plady - I busted out a frittata with spinach tomatoes and cheese globs tonight... not as good as yours shrug.giflol.gif

Gotta go. So. Much. Reading.

Geofizz 09-05-2012 04:45 AM

Sparkle, would you accept those traffic signs that say

SLOW
CHILDREN

DS thinks they're hillarious.

bec 09-05-2012 06:41 AM

Geo - I think those are hilarious too!

I found a poorly worded sentence in my dictionary last night!  Katie was doing some homework.  They were doing dictionary work, looking up a few words that go along with a story they are reading.  The word was obsessed (let's leave out my rant that while "obsession" was in the student dictionary, "obsess" was not).  Anyway, the definition given is, "To preoccupy the mind of excessively."  Pretty sure the "of" shouldn't be there.  This is The American Heritage Dictionary, Second College Edition.

Geofizz 09-05-2012 07:46 AM

I note that subtle correction of my spelling, bec.  ;)

If bec's dictionary example isn't good enough, I'm about to get 1 page essays from students today.  I'll have 45 pages of examples for you.

Juvysen 09-05-2012 07:50 AM

I just read a book on my kindle (I think it must have been self published?) that had a TON of errors.  Like an editor should have been fired, if there was one.  The plot was decent so I stuck it out, but I sort of considered contacting the author and offering editing services.

Here's the link, if you're interested, but I suspect you won't want to read that much to find errors: http://www.amazon.com/Pieces-Silver-Controversial-Historical-ebook/dp/B004HB1W82

Plady 09-05-2012 07:51 AM

Ahh, grammar faux pas!  I was just obsessing about the language in Emily Windsnap that has her constantly saying things like, "What from?"  "Where to?"  eyesroll.gif  I may be overly sensitive but still.

Bec and Poppy - Any chance of a meet-up at the Derby?  Poppy don't you get over for that?   Bec, it sounds like a fun race!  You can pretend you're a thoroughbred!

Welcome.gifJuvysen - I like the sound of your races too!

I don't know whether to be sad for our future, or hopeful because they have you as a professor. I'll choose the latter.

Just look around Governor Walker's webpage here in Wisconsin.

kerc 09-05-2012 10:38 AM

My family can't get enough laughter over this one. I get a free subscription to her magazine and it arrived yesterday. First words out of Leah's mouth?

"Are there any recipes for families?"

Geofizz 09-05-2012 10:50 AM

Oh, oh,oh, I forgot about DS' homework last night:

It was multiple choice (that's really the big problem.  The grammar was irksome, the multiple choice homework fails to instruct):

"Circle the picture that has two less dogs than the first picture."

DS has now had his first lesson in countable vs non-countable quantities.

JayGee 09-05-2012 12:03 PM

Kerc - that is hysterical!!!

Geo - oy....

Drama of the day - DD1, who is 8, left the house this morning in, what I felt, a totally inappropriate outfit (her black Irish dance shorts which are very short, and one of her black lacy undershirts). I threw a short sleeved sweater over her shoulders and she gave me the ultimate FU mom look before getting into my neighbor's car for school. So I drove to school, with an age appropriate outfit, found her at her locker, and made her change.

You are ABSOLUTELY right-on. I was at open house last night and open-mouthed at some of the clothing my kids' classmates are wearing. Oh my.

Runningmommy 09-05-2012 12:57 PM

Jaygee~awesome mama move!!!

RR : increased running almost back on track on training schedule and foot hurts again, also some discomfort in other foot now. Also adding back in body weight work outs.

NR: 8yo having surgery Bec Tuesday on his finger and also needs to see a GI doc for his reflux. Sigh.

bec 09-05-2012 02:39 PM

haha, Geo.  Totally unintentional correction!  Just started typing.

Kerc - I'm crying here over that magazine headline!

I find all manner of badly worded and straight out wrong sentences in the kids' worksheets all the time.  It's aggravating.  No wonder American schools suck!

RR: Going to Ironman night tonight.  It starts with mile repeats and then we get into fun stuff!
