Particularly in the summer, I live off of smoothies. But often my smoothie ends up being a lot of carbs/too sugary, and not enough protein. I'm looking for some sort of protein powder or high protein meal replacement powder I could add to these shakes to increase the protein content. So many of them are chalky, taste funky, or are full of crappy ingredients; I don't want to purchase a container of any type without some recommendations? Any thoughts? Thanks!

Have you looked in the bulk bins? Depending on where you live and what supermarkets you have, you may have some good choices there. I use plain whey powder.

Good thought. I'll look around for that.

Does anyone use anything else to add protein and nutrients? Ground flax seeds? Nutritional yeast? I realize the powdered protein is by nature processed, but I was looking for the least processed as possible, and am interested mixing this up a little bit.

Have you looked into hemp seeds?  We use them in smoothies and for every 2Tbsp, there's 5-6g of protein.  These are what our family buys.  We keep a mason jar full in the fridge and the rest of them in the freezer.  We refill the mason jar as needed.  Hemp seeds have a nutty taste to them.
