I am checking out all of the books you've recommended and have been looking at some other sources. My husband and I have been spending a lot of time talking about these issues, and I think it's largely about changing my philosophical/spiritual position on why the things happened to me did happen. I really feel better than I have in months (years, maybe) about my chances for long-term recovery and survival.
Brandi that is wonderful.

I didn't say all abusers are religious. I said religion fuels abuse.

Anything can fuel abuse. Any philosophy or belief or abscense of belief.

It doesn't matter where, or in what era, or what one believes. There are some humans who will take what is available and twist it to serve themselves.

humans fuel abuse. It is humans who are abusers. Abusers of each other, animals, the planet, religion... Humans are abusers and fuel abuse. There is no other way to put it. What a blanket statement and a false one at that.

amen

The truest answer to violence is love. The truest answer to death is life. The only prevention for violence is for the heart to have no violence within it.  We cannot prevent evil through any system devised by mankind. But we can grapple with evil and defeat it, but only with love—real love.

I was just going to post the same thing. It's helped me a lot thinking through my mother's abuse of me.
