How worried should I be about eating some pickled jalapeno peppers that taste fine but are a little mushy?

There was a little weirdness on the cap, but the jar was half full and looked fine so I ate one and yeah, I Googled afterwards and Botulism is scaring me.

WDYT?

Is this a jar that's been sitting in your fridge? Your pantry? Was it a brand new jar?

If it's something that has been in your fridge, then I wouldn't worry about it. It's not very likely for botulism to start growing while in the fridge, and if it had been there before, the last time it was eaten you would have noticed.

If it's a new jar, then did the cap pop? If the button on the lid was already up, then I wouldn't eat it.

Yeah, it's been refrigerated since it's been opened...I think...unless it got left out overnight at some point. But I'm pretty sure it's remained refrigerated.

Thanks for your response. I did eat it & my DH assures me that I'll live to tell the tale.

That should be absolutely fine.

But even I won't touch a canned something that doesn't pop when first opened.
