My family loves sloppy joes and I used to make it regularly using a recipe which revolves around canned tomato soup. I've stopped buying canned foods, especially tomato products and my family is so disappointed! Anyone have a good recipe for sloppy joe that uses jarred or fresh tomato products? I tried using jarred tomato paste once and it was not very good. Maybe if I added a little sugar to cut down on the acidic taste? Any suggestions?

This is a vegetarian version using lentils, but you could probably just sub the meat for the lentils and try the sauce.

I haven't tried it yet, but it's on my list of things to make.

This is my own personal recipe I've devised. I haven't figured out a replacement for the ketchup, but I do use whatever all natural one I have in the house.


Sloppy Joes

Ok... I haven't had Manwich in probably 20 years... so I'm not the person to say that this tastes like the "real thing". However, I will say it tastes darn good! And it does taste pretty close to what I remember.
This may seem like a lot of "spice", with jalapeno, hot sauce and Tabasco, but it is not spicy at all.

Ingredients:

1 medium Onion, Thinly Sliced
4 stalks Celery, Thinly Sliced
1 Red Bell Peppers, Thinly Sliced
6 cloves Garlic, Finely Chopped
1/2 Jalapeno, Finely Chopped
2 pounds Ground Beef
8 ounces Tomato Sauce
1/4 c Ketchup
1 t Tabasco
2 t Worcestershire
1-14.5 oz can Fire Roasted Tomatoes (or any whole stewed tomatoes)
2 T sugar
1 t Hot Sauce
6 T White Vinegar
2 t Dry Mustard
1/2 t Chili Powder
1 t Paprika
1 t Cumin
1 t Oregano
Salt & Pepper,To Taste

In a large skillet, combine the onion, celery, and bell pepper with a little olive oil. Cook over medium heat approximately 5 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Add garlic and jalapeno, cook another 5 minutes. Transfer to a heat proof bowl, set aside.

Add the beef to the hot skillet. Break into small pieces with a wooden spoon. Cook a few minutes, until about half cooked.

In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, worcestershire, tabasco, hot sauce, sugar, and spices into a paste. Add to the meat, stirring to distribute. Add the tomato sauce, and vinegar to the meat. Break up the roasted tomatoes with your hands, and add the entire can to the meat. Stir the vegetables back in, and simmer until no longer soupy. Add salt and pepper to taste.

The sauce should be below the level of the meat and fairly thick when it is done.

Thanks Cristeen. That looks yummy. My husband will love it as he's a big fan of jalepenos, tabasco, chili powder, and anything else hot and spicy. I don't mind the ketchup so much because it doesn't come in a can and you don't have to use very much of it.

Thanks tinybutterfly. The lentil recipe looks very good. We do eat lentils so I could make it that way but it looks like it would also work quite well with ground beef or bison.

My family will be very happy when they see sloppy joes on the menu again!

Here's ours:
1 onion, chopped
1 stalk of celery, sliced
1 bell pepper, diced
1lb ground turkey/beef/buffalo
1 clove of garlic, diced or chopped

Cook veggies and meat until veggies are tender and meat is cooked through

In a separate bowl, mix:
1 can tomato sauce (we use TJ's organic)
1/4 c. ketchup
1 T apple cider vinegar
2 T brown sugar
1.5 t soy sauce
thyme, salt and pepper to taste.

Pour this over the meat/veggie mix and let it simmer until the sauce gets thick enough for your liking.

My fiance is the one in charge of making sloppy joes when we have them for dinner, so I can say that the recipe is very easy since he can handle it!

We've made them with fresh tomatoes too. I just chop a couple large tomatoes and run them through my mini food processor to puree them, then use that in place of the tomato sauce.

Not momma yet, but momma to a ton of furry, scaly, slimy and feathery critters. whale.gifribbongreen.gif

I have a meat recipe that actually doesn't use canned tomatoes, as you requested. My only suggestion to avoid that and use a recipe that calls for canned tomatoes is to do as we do and can tomatoes and tomato sauce yourself from homegrown. There is a distinct "cooked" flavor you get from canned tomato sauce that you just can't replicate with raw tomatoes without first making the tomato sauce.

Here's the recipe we like that does not call for canned tomatoes of any kind:

2lbs. lean ground beef
1 med. onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 c. ketchup (we use organic non HFCS)
1/2 green pepper, chopped
3 T. Worcestershire sauce
3 T. brown sugar
2 T. prepared mustard (prepare dry English mustard yourself to make it spicy)
3 T. cider vinegar
1 1/5 t. chili powder

In a heavy skillet, brown ground beef with onion and garlic. Add green pepper and soften. Drain off excess fat. Combine ketchup, along with the rest of the ingredients, in a slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 5 -7 hours. Serve spooned over hamburger buns.

I always add barbeque sauce, which is not canned.

Happily married to DH for 6 years, in process to foster-adopt 3 children DD4, DS3 and DS2. We may be bringing half brother age 9 one day as well! We are not infertile, we just have decided that since there are precious children who need homes there is no need for us to have biological children.

Oh ofcourse, I thought that was a given around here hehe. I get the organic stuff from the HFS made with organic cane sugar and no weird additives. I like Annie's Naturals.

This is not highly spiced,

Substitute about 3 cups/750 mL chopped fresh tomatoes, if you have them, for the canned.

1 Tbsp/15 mL oil

1/2 cup/125 mL chopped onion

1 lb/500 g ground beef

1 tsp/5 mL chili powder

1 can (28 oz/796 mL) diced tomatoes, undrained

1 cup/250 mL corn kernels

4 hamburger buns

1/2 cup/125 mL shredded Cheddar cheese

In a large pot or deep skillet, heat the oil over medium heat.
Add the onion, and sauté until it is soft.


Add the ground beef. Cook until it is no longer pink.
Drain off any fat from the pan.


Add the chili powder and tomatoes.
Bring to a boil.
Reduce heat.
Simmer until sauce is thickened (about 20 minutes).


Add the corn. Simmer until sauce is heated through.


Open the hamburger buns.
Place them on plates.
Spoon the meat mixture over each bun.
Sprinkle cheese over each helping.


Serve immediately.

Here is our version of sloppy joes. I buy "organic" ketsup that doesn't have high fructose. I still feel like its too sugary, but it's a dinner we have every once in awhile, so...
I also try to make homemade wheat buns when I make them.
