Every time I cut up an onion, I get that onion smell on my hands and I can't get it off. It will linger on me for up to 2 days. And since we eat onions often, I always smell like them, no matter how often I wash my hands. Does anyone know how to remove the smell from me or how to keep it from sticking?

Thanks,

Tracey

I haven't found away to stop it from sticking other than wearing rubber gloves but the best way to get rid of it is lemon juice. Wash hand with warm soapy water, rub a lemon all over your hands, really squeezing the juice and then rinse and wash again.

I keep a bottle of "ReaLemon" in the firdge just for this purpose as I use lots of onions and garlic. That work well too but I think fresh works even better.

Happy cooking!

Yammer beat me to it. It works really well and is free. Can't beat that!

Oh, and it makes a pretty good dent in fish odor also.

I like a bit of salt in the palm of my hand...add some lemon juice and scrub. does a nice job of exfoliating your hands and gets the smell. follow with lotion and your hands are soooooo soft!

I hold the knife blade with my fingers in each hand while running it under cold water. It works every time.

I've always used wet coffee grounds to just scrub my hands with but like the steel idea I'll have to try it!

i've heard that holding stainless steel helps get rid of the smell

so when i go to the sink to rinse my hands, i just rub the metal sink a bit

the store also sells a piece of hand-sized steel that you can 'wash' with

Thanks for the great ideas. The metal sink works great.
