My husband got a deer this weekend-- the back leg was wounded, previous shot he believes. The wound had green puss in it and the muscle near it was tight, but up farther toward the hip the muscle was not tight.

Is it ok to butcher and just discard the one leg?

I would say it would be fine, but I wouldn't eat the one leg. It will probably be a tougher meat though because it probably had lots of adrenalin.

I would think it would be okay to discard just the leg...but the meat will probably taste really gamey (as PP's have said).

My dad used to process deer for people and had a thriving business with it. We saw many that had infections like that. As long as it wasn't cancerous or through the whole deer it wasn't a problem. I would not eat anything off of that leg though.

THanks for your help ladies-- I feel better about eating it-- I finally found an article on the Field and Stream website that went into better detail of when something is bad-- i.e. swollen, vital organs, hair loss, etc.
