How thin do potatos have to be to be made into chips? What makes them that thin?

I have an *ancient* salad shooter that I do believe will slice pretty thin.

Does anyone have any oven-baked potato chips (comparable to Lays, or Ranch, or onion flavored). I am going to attempt to make some that my husband will hopefully like so I can at least get him off the storebought stuff :-)

Paper thin. Pretty much translucent. You should be able to hold it up to the light and see shadows through it.

A food processor or a mandoline can usually do slices that thin.

As to the flavors, if you can find a salad dressing flavor packet that works (and that you're willing to eat), sprinkling that over them will usually do the trick.

I don't know about baking them though.
